Nikon D5200: Area AF--in an entry-level camera!

Nikon's new D5200 includes the 39-point Multi-CAM 4800DX AF system used in the Nikon D7000. Area AF--in an entry-level DSLR?!
This capability, combined with 5 fps continuous shooting up to 35 Large/Fine JPEG frames and the same 2016-pixel metering system as the D7000, makes for a very compelling package.

C'mon, Pentax, get with the competition...

I'll take it back. That's fantastic AF. But what price, I wonder?

Will it have all the AF issues that the D7000 had? A pretty impressive offering though.

To follow up - so Pentax put the k-5 in the k-30, and Nikon put the D7000 with at 24MP sensor in the D5200. Why, Canon, why didn't you put the 7D into the T4i

£819.99 at Jessops. This means the price will be around US$900-1000 when the camera reaches the United States.

Not EOS 7D AF, but the EOS Rebel T4i did get the 60D's all cross-type AF system.

Putting it as a direct competitor to the k-30. Makes sense.

of course, the megapixel story will shine among sales personnel and entry-level users buying into systems...

I wonder how Pentax will market our K-30 against this MP beast. I'm pretty sure the D7000 successor will have a 24mp sensor too and a D300s- level AF.

New features are getting limited nowadays...

the D5xxx are not entry level

Entry level in a Nikon APS-C is the D3XXX series

the D5XXX series are more comparable to the K-30 --- its a mid-range body.

3 entry level
5 mid level
7 high end

What would I be missing going from a K-5 to a D5200 or D5100? The D5100 refub price is very tempting. My main reason for even looking at this camera is my need for an articulating LCD screen. Other than that I really like my K-5 and DA* glass.

Weather sealing, two dials, top LCD, quiet shutter, solid as heck body, the best version of that 16MP sensor, and some ergonomics (debatable).

You gain the articulating screen, and better AF in the D5200 (maybe).

Not exactly. The entry-level class is typically divided into upper and lower sub-classes. The D5200 is an upper entry-level camera while the D3200 is lower entry-level. The D7000 is a midrange or "enthusiast" class camera, and the D300S and D600 are considered semi-professional. The same holds with Canon: The EOS Rebel T3 is lower entry-level, the T4i upper entry-level, the 60D midrange, and the 7D and 6D semi-professional.

You also lose screw drive AF and metering with non-chipped lenses.

Thanks for the info folks - I'll just muttle along with my wonderful K-5 then. Even without looking at this too hard, I am thinking it would be an expensive journey to jump ship for me right now anyway. I go back to looking at the small field monitor for my K-5.
