Didn't they have some kind of sensor stain issue? My problem going to a D600 isn't the cost of the camera (which by the way, if you're used to a K-5 feels incredibly cheap, both bulky and light), its the cost of the Trinity (14-24, 24-70 and 70-200). I'm better off with Pentax where they don't even have a Trinity to covet. It saves on the needless coveting.

These may be cleaned up demo units, I am sure they probably had the floor at the retail location loaded with these when they first came out...

I own a rocket blower ($10), so the sensor stain issue isn't an issue for me.

This is a good solution to a problem that shouldn't exist, and Nikon should be ashamed for having this problem arise in the first place, but the fix isn't difficult or costly.

For the purpose of comparing prices, I bought the D600 with 24-85mm lens for $2000 in December. This included $120 in Adorama credit, redeemable a month later. It also included a Nikon ME-1 microphone and a foldable viewfinder, and selling both netted about $150. I resold the 24-85 for $350, bringing the D600 to an effective price of $1380, new. Add the rocket blower and I'm up to 1390, even though I've owned that for years.

I realize that this deal isn't for everybody, and it did require a lot of troublesome reselling, and you couldn't get this deal today even if you wanted, and it does come off as bragging or something though I don't intend it as such. All I'm doing is providing more info for price shoppers to mull when considering the value of the body.

There is nothing "cheap" about the D600's feel when you push the shutter button, Norm. The camera is fast and responsive compared to Pentax offerings. While many people on this forum love there K5 for size and other aesthetic reasons but for someone like me that all takes a back seat to a fast, responsive camera. And a larger body is a welcome feature when you start hanging those heavy zooms you noted.

I'm one for liking a quality built camera but in the case of digital cameras and their short life before being out dated, the construction quality of the D600 is sufficient for any enthusiast that will be upgrading on a regular basis, IMHO. YMMV.

Maybe the refurbed D600 has the problem taken care of. But it would be great to have a full warranty like a new one instead of the 90-day warranty that is being offered... just in case Oops, the 1-year Sq Trade warranty costs $225.

The only one of those I really covet is the 31.... so , less coveting this way. I have the 40 xs and FA 50 1.7 so 43 is kind of covered and the Sigma 70 macro, which is an amazing lens. So definitely less coveting staying with Pentax.

I thought the staining was also caused by oil in the shutter mechanism, and it took wet cleaning to to actually clean the sensor.

There are, however, a number of comments from experienced photographers that are having oil spots on D600s. I’m not certain if they’re seeing the same, or a different phenomenon.

Check out this advertisement image for DxO FilmPack software

Click on on the brown tone image of the guy in sunglasses holding a camera. Look at all the dust on the sensor in the sky. And that is just what we can see. I don't know what camera was used but clearly anyone can get a dirty sensor. If you use your camera a lot and change lenses, chances are you'll need to clean it regularly.

Apparently, experience with oil or dust on the D600 is variable. I cleaned mine once when new and I'm still waiting to clean it again. Any longer of a wait and I'll consider it "normal" for any ILC.

JinDesu,

Others report mixed findings, for example here: Flickr: Discussing Spots on D600 in Nikon D600 CLUB

Many flickr users report that a rocket blower works fine. Some others say that a wet clean was required. My personal experience suggests that a rocket blower is fine, but that may vary on a per-camera basis.

I knew of the issue before I bought the camera. Early adopters reported that after the first 4000 clicks or so the new dust slowed down or stopped appearing. I can't confirm this directly, but I was satisfied that even if oil was the problem then I would be able to clean the sensor at 4000 and carry on. In my case all it took was some rocket blowing. I could be lucky, or maybe some users aren't effectively using their rocket blower.
