Bye bye, Pentax II !!!

A while back I wrote that we had sold off our K-5s, and most of our Pentax lenses, leaving just a K-x, a DA40, and a DA55-300, as backup.

My wife opted for a complete OM-D set, with most of the lenses available, including the 70-300, the last item mostly for BIF (bird in flight) photography. Sadly, this lens proved to be less than sterling in the long end, and as she also had the 18-150, and the 40-150, she didn't need it at lower focal settings, so this was a big disappointment.

So she 'reactivated' our DA55-300, from semi-retirement, and got a brand new, poisonous blue-colored K-30, after having sold the 70-300. At the same time I sold my D3200, and all the F Mount zooms, bar the AF-S VR 70-300, as that more or less sits on my Nikon V1 all the time.

Quite different beasts, but the Pentax 55-300 works like a dream on the wife's K-30!

> IMHO my 55-300 was a great compact sharp lens but only after using the 70-300 did I realize how cheaply the Pentax lens was constructed and it's af speed and noise (during af) quite archaic.

Agree, but on the K-30 it is surprisingly efficient!

> The 70-300 is what I call a sleeper lens - incredibly sharp and equal to pro lens in sharpness between 70-250.

Indeed! I'd say the Pentax 55-300 might be slightly better in the long end than the Nikon 70-300 VR, but I haven't done very serious comparisons, yet!

> Also your feelings on the 24mp sensor?

The 24MP sensor in the D3200 didn't really get me, but the one in the D600 impresses a lot! Again not done much comparative tests, yet, but I love the dynamic range of the D600's sensor!

> After seeing the pics posted from the D600 I see it offering a more subtle tonal palette compared to the D800 36MP sensor which is making my decision between D600/D800 much harder

Agree fully! The K-30 is also a big step forward, even if it looks a bit cheapish, compared to the K-5.

So what is your actual meaning here in the title? Are you selling your remaining kit and leaving Pentaxia altogether?

There will always be some thing better than you have; good luck with your new gear...I hope that is what you mean by the title

I think the OP is posting this 'return to Pentax' thread as a follow-up to a previous 'goodbye Pentax' thread. The title should be 'Bye Bye Pentax, Part II'.
