I'll take a fast focus and good low light focus camera above all the touchy-feely things people seems to covet so much. I don't need that to give me inspiration to take a picture. Performance does inspire me, however. I have a slower mirrorless for times I want it light and easy but when I need to catch action reliably, I'll go with the other brand.

I'll add this to the list of problems.

Google 'Canon Err 01'
Plenty of problems of this nature and I was 'convinced' by the Pentax haters here that Canon was the best and sinless.
Did not know that Canon lenses have this issue until I was hit with this issue myself and googled it.

Basically a communication issue btwn lens and camera.
Usually due to worn flex circuits in the lens.
Made worse on EF mount as the lens can't do much w/o communication to camera.
At least on a Pentax, most of it is mechanical and the lenses still work manually.

The grass always looks green on the other side.

I haven't noticed many, if any, cameras without some flaw? Shocking, it's not. It is just part of what we deal with in this business...or most any other that relies on ever changing technology. As long as it is bearable or can be rectified it is not a deal killer. Certainly not a reason to reject an entire brand, when they are all subject to defects.
Regards!

The D600 problem was because something was too tight and scraped off parts of the mirror curtain AFAIK. That's why it was a dust issue instead of a simple stain issue.
It was craploads of dust though. That D7100 video is minor in comparison.
That's why the D600 dropped in value so much. The D600 also has a crappier AF module compared to the D7100...

And the internet makes mountains out of mole hills too. I'm not saying the problem isn't real but it's not systemic either. I've only cleaned my sensor once and I'm still waiting to clean it again. And my AF is just as fast, if not faster because of a better lens, than my buddies D7100.

Good for the D7100, because the D600 is more than adequate. If the K-5, an excellent camera in most respects. had AF like the D600, then I'd never have been able to sell it(Though all the deals on the forum keep tempting me back).

No kidding. If the D600's AF is "crappy", what word would you use to describe Pentax's AF system by comparison.

I found the AF to be equal between the K5II and D600 depending on what lenses are used. The K5II is definitely better in low light AFS. I found the D600 to hunt a little more in low light. I like them both equally but the dust problem I had turned me off.

Yes, the D600's single point, low light focus does not go as low as their pro cameras. However, it will focus more reliably and in lower light via live view. And this is conditions you can hardly see anything in the view finder anyway.

Note that I said "crappier".
Compared to the D7100's AF module, the D600's AF (basically the same as the D7000's) is crappy
A friend switched from the D7000 to the D800 (same module as the D7100 pretty much). Huge difference in his number of keepers but he was shooting a lot of moving subject (kids) shots in low light using flash and narrow DOF.

And the D600 dust problem was real...maybe subject to a manufacturing range, but enough problems to be real...and ugly if you have it.

Mine hardly misses a shot and can nail fast moving objects coming at you. It is not the exact same as the D7000. It has teaks of improvements. So your D600 is not very good in this regard? What lenses are you using?

The info on the Interweb points to Nikon having sourced updated D600 shutter assemblies from their supplier in February and having revised their service center repair procedure from just cleaning the sensor to cleaning the sensor and replacing the shutter. Anyone owning a D600 which routinely needs the glass in front of the sensor cleaned should send their camera in for the repair.

To recap the D600 story, a specification was mistakenly changed, Nikon identified the problem and worked with the supplier on a solution, Nikon is standing behind its product by replacing the problem part in customers' cameras which have it. A good question for a Pentax forum is how does any Pentax owner know the shutter in his or her camera wasn't made by the same supplier as the D600 shutter.

Because we haven't had the same problem.
