The only waterproof Full HD smartphone**

Xperia Z Ultra is both elegant and durable. With an impressive rating of IP55 and IP58, this smartphone isn’t only resistant to dust, but is waterproof** too – giving you the freedom to enjoy it anywhere. You can even film in Full HD underwater, taking your large-screen smartphone experience to a new level. The camera features “Exmor RS for mobile”, HDR for both photos and film, and Superior Auto mode automatically activates HDR and noise reduction when needed, so you’ll get stunning imagery even in challenging light conditions.

My coworker has one of these. I thought it was just water-resistant, so I asked him again. When you have the charging flap open, it actually warns you to close it to waterproof the camera.

That's the one I'm getting next. Then I can keep going even when I'm in the bathtub.

Guess that's the end of the waterproof point-n-shoot too then?

Not if you want something small that can fit your pockets.
Most smartphones with 5" screen is already too large to be really portable IMO, so going for (small) tablet sized smartphones is just over the top.

I think it's a mistake that Sony made it to be slimmest possible, as it seems they then had to put lots of "dead space" around the screen instead, making the front much larger than on FI Samsung Galaxy Mega, which has almost as large screen. Galaxy note 2 looks tiny compared to the other two giants.

The Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 and Galaxy note 2 only have a 720p display and are not waterproof so they are not in the same class. I would take the 6.5mm thin 1080p 6.4" waterproof Xperia Z Ultra over the thicker 720p non-waterproof Samsung 6.3" and 5.5".

If you want a waterproof phone, the easiest place to find one is from the Japanese market... like the one I happen to be posting from ;p

Phones in Japan have traditionally been water and dust proof... even all the way back when everyone had clam shell flip phones...

It's just too bad that they don't see a market outside of Japan... apart from Sony who knows a good idea when it sees one!

For the money the Sony Xperia Z Ultra cost, I would rather choose standard Sony Xperia Z and 10" Sony Xperia Tablet Z, both full HD and waterproof. (Not that I care much of having full HD on a smartphone)
