Sony RX100 Mark 2

Sony has just announced an improved version of the RX100 with a backlit low-noise sensor:

Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-RX100M II Digital Camera DSC-RX100M2/B

They put in wi-fi and other firmware enhancements as well. If the price hadn't gone up by $100, this might have been the perfect premium P&S

They also announced the RX-1R, a RX-1 w/o the AA filter.

I believe the sensor size in the M is 1 inch? smaller than APSC?

Yes, it's the same size as in the Nikon 1. It is smaller than m4/3, but it takes excellent pictures. This is an awesome camera, but I agree with Biro. Why is it $750? They should have sold it for the same price as the Mark 1.

$100 for not only wifi and some firmware enhancements, but also for a new sensor, better (tiliting) screen, and a hotshoe for a EVF or a mic or a better flash.

Cant' wait til they add a phone function to it.

Yeah, the increase seems reasonable to me for what you get. Just wish they'd gone for a better (less zoom, more aperture) lens.

The flippy screen looks nice, especially how they have managed to implement it without practically adding any depth to the camera body. I'm also curious about how much difference the new BSI sensor will make to the IQ of the camera. The DxOMark scores will be interesting for this model.

I notice Sony are also now making available an add-on hand-grip for the RX-100 II that seems a clone of the Richard Franiac grip, which seems an acknowledgement that the original RX100 design is a bit too 'slippy'. I guess the Sony grip will also fit on the RX100 'Classic' too. At US $14 it's also cheaper than the 3rd party grip.

But in general I think I will be sticking with my current RX100. For this sort of compact camera, I don't really need a flash hotshoe, or a flippy screen, or an ability to add an external EVF.

Actually I think it's almost a bargain, especially when you consider the yield of the back illuminated sensor chips will be quite a bit lower. I saw somewhere that this is the largest BSI chip ever commercialised. High ISO performance seems significantly better.

Considering that it can easily produce a landscape picture with far greater clarity, acuity and DOF than my DSLR - I personally feel its worth every penny

I have rub numerous tests against my D7000 and if I'm out and about the Sony is the easy and lightest choice without giving up anything

Not much difference between the RX-100 original and the RX-100 II, in terms of sensor performance, according to DxOMark. The BSI seems to have contributed only a little to low light performance.

About 1/3 of a stop better than the Mark 1. Not too bad and an impressive performance for such a small camera. For fun I compared it with older DSLR like the K10D and it fares pretty well against it, even beating it in DR by about 1 stop on the whole range... I'll probably upgrade my MK 1 to the new one for the other features too.
