Panasonic FZ70 Review -- Hands-On Preview

Optics. The Panasonic FZ70's LUMIX DC Vario lens delivers a maximum aperture of f/2.8-5.9 across its 60x zoom range, which is fairly bright compared to the competition. The Canon SX50, for example, sees maximum aperture fall from f/3.4 to f/6.5 across its shorter zoom range.

The lens features 14 elements in 12 groups, including three dual-sided aspherical lenses, and three regular aspherical lenses. That's a total of nine aspherical surfaces!. There are also three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) lenses. Panasonic says that combining all these elements helps suppress wide-angle distortion and telephoto color bleeding. It's important to note that Panasonic manufactures its own lenses in its Yamagata factory, which gives the company an advantage over others in terms of access and cost.

Interesting. Pity they stopped at a mere 1200mm equiv.
I look forward to some test images esp at something like ISO 800 (which will be needed at the long-end) that compare it to the SX-50.

Aiding the FZ70's image capturing capabilities is the company's POWER O.I.S image stabilization technology, which minimizes blur due to camera movement and vibration. Panasonic officials told us the image stabilization on the FZ70 offers twice the shake correction at 60x zoom than does the FZ60 at 24x. If accurate, that's an incredible feat, and we're eager to put it to the test in the real world when we post our full review.

20mm on the wide end is more interesting than 1200mm on the long end, IMO.

Panasonic is on a roll with these bridge camera megazooms. I have been eyeing their f/2.8 constant zoom Lumix DMC-FZ200 that reaches out to 600mm (at f/2.8!) but this new one is also quite interesting with the 60x zoom and 20mm wide end.

Insane...

When I finally upgraded to CS 6 last year, I was blown away by the lens correction algorithms built in to PS. And Lightroom. When I finally upgraded my camera from an *ist D to the K5 (what an incredible thing), then I found lens correction algorithms built in the camera. All of the bad stuff about this lens will be fixed in post, I believe. The age of having to buy GREAT lenses is fading fast. You can now refocus things, change the apparent aperture, and fix all the stuff that needs fixing in post these days, so I think my next lens will be some ridiculous zoom like that, even though I actually prefer fixed focal lengths.

Cheers,
Cameron

If 1200mm is not enough there's a 1.7x TC lens accessory.

Cool. It also supports 5X digital zoom. So add everything together ((1200x5) x1.7) and it should do over 10,000mm
