Want to take better photos with your smartphone? How about getting a better camera?

If this allegedly leaked image of a Sony lens attaching to a Xperia smartphone is the real deal, then that’s what Sony has in mind. Take a lens with a built-in sensor, battery, memory, etc. (basically a full-on camera packed into a lens) and make it mountable to your smartphone. Then, you use your camera app on your phone to control the “lens” and wirelessly transfer images to your phone’s camera roll.

This setup will further reduce the steps required to get better photos on your smartphone. Several cameras now offer the ability to wirelessly transfer images to your phone; however, the ability to do it seamlessly hasn’t quite arrived just yet. By making the “lens” really a part of the phone and controlling the capture from the phone, it could simplify the process and make it a better capture experience for smartphone users.

Rumors have it that the first round from Sony will use the same sensor as found in the Sony RX100 II, along with the same lens unit.

This is a complete new kind of photography and probably the smallest camera ever made on a large sensor. I have been told the first lens to be released soon will feature the same RX100MII sensor and same Zeiss lens!!! And there will be a second model with smaller sensor and larger zoom.

This unit is using the large 1" RX100 II sensor not a tiny sensor like on the Samsung Galaxy camera phone.

And the “lens-camera” transmits the images via NFC and WiFi to the smartphone/tablet! You can mount it on the smartphone but also use it separately!!! You will see the live view images on your mobile device. This is a complete new kind of photography and probably the smallest camera ever made on a large sensor. Neither the module nor the base is a complete camera. The Sony contraption, according to the articles, is a complete camera that is dependent on another piece of equipment to function.
This concept seems to me like making a complete car, minus a steering wheel so it has to be towed by another car.

Being able to control something so small, remotely, has serious potential. Using it as a traditional camera is merely an option. I don't know that I'd want to have to pay the price for their 1" sensor and RX100 lens, but a cheaper combo would be fun to play with. I hope they allow you to pair multiple cameras to once device, and toggle between them.
