Sony QX100 - more cumbersome than convenient?

A lots of excitement around this camera, interesting idea but somehow I feel it will be more cumbersome than convenient to handle two devices. Anyone else thinks the same?

Who is supposed to buy this?

Why would anyone want to use this?

Am I missing something?

Isn't that kind of like asking who would buy the Theta 360?

I think it is simply aimed at people who want to take better quality photos, but not be burdened with something extra on their person as large as a typical P&S camera. Nevermind the lens and sensor are the guts of the RX100ii. Most people already carry a phone, so this is simply an accessory rather than a full on camera body, and the size and weight that goes along with it. The QX10 could be carried in an empty flip-top pack of cigarettes (?)

I think its a cool idea and not only for pairing directly with the phone as an attached EVF/lens/sensor combo, but also for off body shooting and using the phone as the tethered monitor.

Innovation deserves some open minded thought.

The only issue is that, while width and height is a bit smaller than most compact cams, the depth is definitely not smaller (2.5 x 2.5 x 1.3 vs 3.9" x 2.3" x 1" of the S100). Given that - a compact camera with wifi or some form of communication would do everything that the QX series will do, without draining your phone battery, impede calls and text, etc. Off body shooting and tether monitor can be done with compact cams - that tech is in some Canon and Nikon dslrs now. Shouldn't be too difficult to implement in a compact.

I do like the idea, but I think the size is a bit off-putting. Can't really comment on price though, that seems reasonable for a new product to me. Especially since the RX100II is $800.

I agree...how often are new concepts perfect in their first iteration? I say that happens once in a generation. Most of the times, products begin like this: not perfect by any means, but also not that bad and offers a good spring board for future optimization.

Agreed. My first ever mobile phone was about the size of a small shoe and did only 1 thing, now look at them. New products are exciting and every so often 1 catches your eye as ideal for what you do, or would like to do. Not everyone will want it, but not everyone wants a D3 too.

Here's how Sony can win this game: make a 3D phone that can connect to 2 of these lenses Or a Sony glass, like Google glass but without the creepy camera.

It seems a bit cumbersome for what it is shown doing. I wonder when some kids will come along and find a new way to use the GX100! Maybe they'll write some app for the phone to turn it into a robotic eye.

According to Amazon, you're missing a lot.
Amazon Best Sellers: best Digital Cameras

And I can't find any Pentax in that best seller 100 list. Amazon shoppers must be asking themselves, who's buying Pentax?

Seeing as I don't own a Pentax at the moment, I can also ask who's buying Pentax.

I will admit that I'm surprised to see preorders for the Sony unit doing so well.

Now I really wish Google would make a camera-less glass that can pair with a QX. Redefine professional photography
