LEICA CEO confirms issues with 50mm/2 Summicron

There have been several reports online describing flare issues when using the $7,350 APO Summicron 50mm f/2.0 Asph lens, but so far there was no official response from Leica.

Few days ago, during the 2013 Digital Show in Melbourne, Kristian Dowling got a brief explanation from Leica's CEO Alfred Schopf current owners experiencing the issue should send their lens to Germany for repair:

Kristian: "Can you tell me about the current situation regarding flare issues found by owners of the Apo-Summicron 50/2 lens?"

Alfred: "Well, after some problem solving we found 4 minor issues, and manufacturing was stopped for 3 weeks and will recommence next week. For current owners experiencing any issues, they should send their lens to Germany for a complete refurbish."

And people thought the Sony RX1 R was too expensive at $2,798 with the Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* 35mm f/2 Lens.

What good is a $7350 lens if it doesn't include a free tuneup?

Thankfully my copy of this lens doesn't appear to suffer from this issue, this lens is the 4th most expensive 50mm lens in my collection.

Because Leica lenses are hand made (presumably by vestal virgins under the light of the silvery moon etc. etc.) there can be significant variation from unit to unit. Actually, according to Roger Cicala, variations are significant even in factory made lenses from Canikon.

I went through three different Summicron 50mm lenses before settling on one that I particularly liked. I will probably keep that one for the rest of my life.
