In this day and age, it's advisable to file patents on your ideas before you know anything about viability... but this would be excellent if it were actually implemented at some point.

As for DSLRs, it would be fantastic to take a few flagship bodies, strip out sensors, and offer a few options of size/ergonomics/button layout/weather sealing, then offer the full range of sensors for those bodies. If you did a lot of outdoors work, you could then have a D800 sensor dropped into a very compact and weather-sealed body instead of the current monster of a body.

Hopefully this will lead to focusing on the bodies themselves. The motivation to design the most durable, light, and ergonomic body increases tenfold if you can keep upgrading your sensor down the line. Maybe the build quality of the old film days, where cameras are still running fantastically after 40 years? I doubt the same could be said of any of our digitals.

I waas thinking about this the other day... imagine a Pentax body with Pentax DR and low light capability, then being able to swap in a Foveon sensor for those rare situations where everything is perfect for one of those magic Foveon moments. Now that would just be over the top cool. APS-c long lens superior magnification and DoF and then D800 type IQ, selectable in the same body.

Progress (?)

Sounds almost as good as being able to switch to a different type of film...
