Looks like a marvelous lens for those with a D800

He said "affordable" at the beginning of the video. Well, I guess, if you are use to forking out $8-10K for lenses this lens seems more "affordable". However, I speculate the same kind of people who would buy a $8-10K lens will still be the only buyers of this lens apart from a small percent added that find $4K within their reach.

Dpreveiw and DXo have their test for the lens out now:

Lens reviews update: test data for the Zeiss Otus 1.4/55: Digital Photography Review

The results are simply stunning; this might well be the sharpest fast 35mm (or at least non-rangefinder 35mm) lens ever made. The designers at Zeiss really deserve some real accolades for the sharpness and lateral CA control they were able to get with this lens (regardless of the price it ended up being). One wonders whether something else (spherical aberration, longitudinal CA) has not been corrected as well in order to get these results.

Just for perspective here, the Pentax 645 25mm lenses are considerable more expensive, USD 5K.

Actually, 25mm is not the equivalent of 50 on FF, 75 would be… 25 on MF is an ultra wide… so no, not really a comparison.

Makes you wonder though.. do they have Black Friday sales or anything like that?

Awesome looking lens!
Looks like Zeiss is comitted to filling in the FF gap. ie. the D800 was missing a 50mm
Wonder if it will come in A-mount?

Why anyone would name their lens after Rupert's squirrel is beyond me.

Norm, the 75mm lenses in the 645 system are straightforward, simple optical designs,
just 6 elements, so they would not be appropriate for a price comparison.

On the other hand, both the Otus 55mm and the 645 system 25mm
are modern, retrofocal designs, with 12 elements, each weighing a kilogram.

Plus silent autofocus, plus weather resistance, plus larger elements to cover 645D image circle.

More to the point, how could anyone confuse a squirrel with an owl?

That's well short of a grand's worth of added value.

When Ricoh bring out an MF short-register mirrorless,
enterprising and well-heeled forum members
will be able to check whether the Otus 55mm covers a 55mm image circle.

FWIW, the diameter of the Otus (92.4mm) is actually larger than the 645 system 25mm (90mm).
