some say the Sony is ugly, but the look has grow on me... certainly better than the rounded look (but with the battery grip, it is ugly).
I can see the shutter button position is kind of weird...

Question to anyone that might have insight: I have no experience with Nikon so I'm not sure if Takumar lenses are adaptable to a camera like the D800... but I was wondering if using said lenses on a 36 megapixel camera like the A7r would "show their age" more than a lower megapixel sensor?

The idea of using the Takumar lenses and getting similar results to the 35mm film era is appealing... but I'm not sure if such expectations are reasonable when all modern factors are taken into account.
I think that depends on the eye (and standards and/or biases) of the beholder

A fine lens is a fine lens. I think where compatibility can come up is between the lens MTF & aberrations interacting with the sensor geometry.

It depends on your expectations. If you magnify to extremes a 36 MP image could show lens differences more - but if you use your images more like the film era (as I do) old lenses can do very well. My Leica M9 is "only" 18 MP, and I use Leica lenses from 1939 on. I'm amazed at the nice results from these older lenses. They generally have lower contrast, but resolution detail is still amazing, and 18 MP 100% crops in the central areas are fine. Sometimes the lower contrast is a benefit, and post-processing can add "snap" if you prefer.
However, I have no need for 36MP, so I went with the 24 MP model.

It's "just" a 20mp body, but at that level it seems like it depends on the lens

Flickr: Discussing Canon 6D and Vintage M42 Lenses. in Canon EOS 6D - Official Group

nothing to complain about on the results front, very pleasing to look at.

I do wonder how many of us plan to use M42 for shots that need critical performance. For me I use M42 for the pleasure of using them and for the unique rendering, not for lens resolution or edge to edge, razor sharp performance (both of which are overrated anyway).

For that reason I think I can tide myself over with a lensbooster and a Nex that with focus peaking, until the MILC FF style body can go down in price or availability.

I have Nikon FF and M42s are unusable without glassed adapter, or modifying infinity focus which I'm not willing to do.

Never thought it's ugly, but I think that it's growing on me as well

Sony has never been known for ergo though, but in that front I dont think anything can match the way ME super feels in my hands anyway.

I had the exact OPPOSITE reaction...especially to the first one. The second one's OK, except the lens is WAY too big for the camera, or likely, vice versa.

Hideous. You thought the K01 was bad...

IMHO.

Cheers,

What functionality does the adapter provide?

I don't think so yet but Sony has raised the bar. I think the R&D dept's of every camera manufacturer is going to be working overtime to match this in regards to size and weight. There have been numerous threads speculating the possibility of a camera like this for a good while. Sony made one.

Since the 55mm F/1.8 won't be available until January it gives me an excuse to hold off until some reviews come in and the lens is available.

Fuji is leaking the X200 (FF version of the X100) which will be the first step in bringing a FF EVIL-ILC to the market.

This is growing on me. I won't ditch my K3 preorder to grab an A7/r, but I may manhandle it in the shop when they start shipping. If there are some nice rebates in the future and I got a hole in my pocket then maybe...

The idea of a FF mirrorless slightly larger than an OMD EM5 (which tells me about the size of an LX) is very very inciting, especially if I can mount manual M glass!

What a great bit of fun!

Of course, all the Pentax lenses used on these Sony cameras with the adapters lack any electrical or mechanical linkage, so have to be used in full manual mode only, but it's still going to be great fun for some people, though hardly a serious solution for Full Frame Fans.

I think the FFFs will want the other things usually associated with Pro level equipment, like all the various accessories and options, and a large degree of ruggedness.

The Sony cameras look a bit too delicate for heavy pro type use, surely!

Graham.
That depends. I want full frame for tripod-mounted landscape and still-life shooting. All manual is no problem. I would use the viewfinder only when light was too bright to use the rear screen.

Neither of the two linked by Adam provide mechanical or electronic function transfer. Apparently, it is possible for other mounts, but not the K-mount. Some may take this to mean that it will happen, but, after some initial interest from me, until it does happen, I won't be seriously thinking about buying an A7. It's a nice idea, but the E-mount also prevents any IBIS (look at the photos of the sensor through the mount – and people complained about the K-mount being tight for FF IBIS!). As things stand right now, I'm not about to buy a body I'll only use infrequently, at that price.

I don't want one of these btw, optical view finders are what it's all about and who the heck needs 36 MP?
If you get a proper adapter like the novoflex one, then you'll be able to use any lens in M or Av mode as the adapter includes an aperture ring. Otherwise you'd be restricted to using only older lenses that have their own aperture rings.

If I can get good IQ from K-mount lenses set manually, and the camera resolution and dynamic range equal the D800E, I will buy an A7r unless Pentax announces an equally good full frame soon.

I have two Fotodiox PK-NEX (E mount) adapters that work in full frame mode on my full frame Sony NEX-VG900 and one has aperture control that works on PK mount lenses without aperture ring. My APS-C 10-24mm Tamron has no vignetting in full frame mode with hood off and aperture set to 13mm or more .BTW my VG900 and A7/A7r also have an APS-C crop mode for no vignetting when using APS-C lenses.

Ewwww, no dedicated battery charger. need to charge the camera through usb. what the heck is that nonsense?

The Camera Store also said while they feel good, they don't feel as durable as they should, wouldn't trust the sealing/construction as much as a D800 for example.

But that charging thing... wow, Sony... what were you thinking?
