Sony A7 and A7r Officially Announced (Full frame supporting K-mount adapter!)

Some interesting announcements have just been made by Sony: two new 24Mp (A7) and 36Mp (A7R) full-frame mirrorless cameras that also happen to be the lightest FF ILC's out there. Alongside the two cameras they've also announced 4 new FF lenses (28-70mm/2.8, 70-200mm/2.8, 55mm/1.8, and 35mm/2.8, a RX-10 1" premium superzoom camera (24-200mm/2.8 eqv.), and a number of accessories for the A7's.

Sony A7 (Alpha 7)
•$1699 (Sony Alpha a7 Digital Camera ILCE7/B)
•World’s lightest interchangeable lens full-frame camera
•Full Frame 24.3 MP resolution with 14-bit RAW recording
•Fast Hybrid AF w/ phase-detection for DSLR-like speed
•Fast Intelligent AF optimized for full-frame sensor
•Fully compatible w/ Sony’s E-mount and new full-frame lenses
•Direct access interface for fast, natural shooting control
•High contrast 2.4-million dot OLED EVF for eye-level framing
•Simple connectivity to smartphones via Wi-Fi® or NFC
•PC control w/ remote video capture control
•Full HD movie at 24p/60i/60p w/uncompressed HDMI output

Sony A7r (Alpha 7r)
•$2299 (Sony Alpha a7R Digital Camera ILCE7R/B)
•World’s lightest interchangeable lens full-frame camera
•Full Frame 36.3 MP resolution with 14-bit RAW recording
•Fast Intelligent AF optimized for full-frame sensor
•Fully compatible w/ Sony’s E-mount and new full-frame lenses
•Direct access interface for fast, natural shooting control
•High contrast 2.4-million dot OLED EVF for eye-level framing
•Simple connectivity to smartphones via Wi-Fi® or NFC
•PC control w/ remote video capture control
•New high-speed BIONZ® X image processor
•Full HD movie at 24p/60i/60p w/uncompressed HDMI output

See spec sheets attached.

I think that both of these cameras will be winners: though they lack an OVF, the price (and surely performance) will be extremely competitive compared to what the D600 and D800 have to offer. Plus, with the appropriate adapter (Voigtlander Adapter for Pentax K Lens to Sony E Mount BD222S B&H or Novoflex Adapter for Pentax K Lens to Sony NEX Camera NEX/PENT) you can use all your Pentax lenses with either of these cameras!

Personally I think the A7 is definitely worth reviewing, or perhaps even owning given my sizeable investment in Pentax glass. I have a feeling that the A7R may be a bit too good for older Pentax glass, however- but I guess we will have to wait and see!

Pre-ordering:

•$1699 (Sony Alpha a7 Digital Camera ILCE7/B)
Sony a7 Mirrorless Digital Camera ILCE7/B B&H Photo Video
•$2299 (Sony Alpha a7R Digital Camera ILCE7R/B)
Sony a7R Mirrorless Digital Camera ILCE7R/B B&H Photo Video

Why I will wait for the K3F

I look at these two cameras from Sony - especially the A7r and imagine that chip in the K3 body.

All very doable - given we know the chip exists, and the base spec's as listed.

I imagine the K3F and think two things - I would be prepared to wait for a few months for it to arrive, and I would be prepared to pay in about USD $2,000-$2,500 for it.

I wonder how long it will take before we see the K3F, with a FF 36MP, 14 bit RAW chip included.

It would be quite a camera

This may be better for my photography than the D800E. The body price is right, anyway.

I am very impressed. My favorite part is the 24-70 2.8 w/ OSS.

Those are some gorgeous cameras. I wish I was rich.

No mention of shake reduction.

You really think Pentax can do FF at Sony's price?

Scaling up the mirror, VF and sensor would probably add a grand to the camera.. I reckon they could announce one next week to be honest

They could have announce a Pentax FF camera in 2010 too. Or any other date in the past. Sorry, just some Pentax FF scepticism.

There is absolutely no need whatsoever to be spend $200-300 on a PK/K to E adapter. There are many on the market for well under $50.
