Pretty neat. Not sure if I can give up all the physical control on Q though... Too bad there's no more room to increase sensor size on the Q.

If you head over to camerasize.com you can get a top-down view of any M43 lens mounted on the GM1.

It's certainly cute but I still prefer the Q. Lack of in-body stabilization is unfortunate along with lack of physical controls as well.

Looking at those numerical differences between the two models I don't see anything that can't be taken care of with a simple belt sander!

I saw the GM1 in a shop next to a Q7 this evening (just a non-functional model) and the body itself is certainly no bigger than the Q. The thing that surprised me was that the GM1's lens looks so out of proportion to the body that it just doesn't look right. The finish is nice, but the proportions are all wrong. In fact, the GM1+lens as a package looks closer in size to Panasonic's GF6 than is does to the Q. The price difference is also huge. The GM1 lens kit is 89,800 yen compared to 39,800 yen for the Q7 kit. To be fair, the GM1 will drop 20,000 yen after a couple of months, as is normal in Japan - this has already happened with the Q7.

So I don't think the Q7 is threatened by this. As enthusiasts, we can marvel at the fact they got a 4/3 sensor in there, but the average consumer won't be so impressed. If a customer comes into a shop looking for a compact or super zoom, the Q7 is an interesting alternative for not much more money. I think a lot of the Japan sales happen when sales staff up-sell to such customers. The salesperson can explain that the IQ is better on the GM1, but these customers are never going spend that much.

For an existing 4/3 user, however, it looks really nice - a small body that can take the same lenses as the EM-1. It's like the K-01 is to the K20D for me. So, I think it's a great product, but not really going to challenge the Q7 directly.

How about the handling? I've handled the Q7 before and it is better than any camera comparable in size, compacts or ILCs. From the looks of it the GM1 doesn't handle as nice, especially with the relatively oversize lenses.

I like using my Q with macro lenses like my Kiron 105mm F2.8 because of the 5.6x crop but since I purchased the NEX-3N I use that more since it's not much larger than the Q even with 16-50mm PZ OSS zoom. The GM1 would work with my m4/3rd lenses like my Voigtlander Nokton 25mm f/0.95 but I prefer my GH2 with EVF .

No hotshoe on the GM1 kills it for me.
With the electronic shutter, it could have been a killer strobist camera :-(

Thinking the same thing. I've let my m43 stuff go, but their AF video has always been good, and newer sensors definitely have improved DR. The 12-35 and adapted DA40/70 (or the Lumix 35-100) would be quite a kit.

*edit* $1400 for the 35-100, and that's a price drop? Never mind, my Quantaray 28-90 will adapt just fine.
