Taken on Sony a7 (ILCE-7) with Novoflex adapter and Pentax FA 31mm LTD

All photos have been processed in Lightroom (some lightly, some quite heavily). I don't remember the aperture for most of them, but I shoot wide open or close to wide open most of the time.

Great shots I like the one of your friend enjoying his latte.. One of my favorite things to do to my friends is say "hey!" and take a shot a half second after. You can get some pretty funny faces

DPR have done a short review of experiences shooting old manual lenses on the A7. It makes for interesting reading. A highlight for Pentax users is that the reviewer appears to have a K 35mm f/2, and the results from it look very nice indeed.
a number of people, including me, did not like the way that review was done, to say the least... but it was interesting.

i have an fa35, f2 of course, that is very bright in the corners on the a7r, much brighter than the native fe35mm is, but i'm not sure how the sides compare to the sony glass... probably not nearly as good.

the a7r is much tougher in the sides/corners than the a7 is, finding wide glass that isn't mush on the sides is difficult... i've tried half a dozen 24mm's, none have really delivered on the sides... that list includes trying two 24mm 2.8 sigma superwide II's, a vivitar/kiron 24mm f2, an immaculate smc 24mm 28, etc.

the fdn canon 24mm 2.8 was probably the best so far; i just put an oly 24mm f2.8 on there, $199 from keh, but it's a junk lens, with multiple issues, sending it back on monday... it is incredibly dark.

it has a lot of promise tho, if it wasn't decentered so bad, i could give a more definitive statement

ok here they are..Went out today and boy was it snowing, used 2 different m42 lenses on my tilt adapter. My 3.5/24mm m42 super-takumar and my 2.8/105mm super-takumar. I was happier with the 105mm results. Next time I go out Im going to try my 3.5/28mm and my 1.4/50mm.

I see you 've tested all 3 limited FA's on A7.
Could you please show us your A7+Novoflex+FA
Can't wait to see the combo... I care about the weight and the size ...a lot!

How smooth is manual focusing on those lenses? Does Focus Magnification and Focus Peaking engage automatically ?

I have a thread here I attempt to check if the pentax lenses work on FF.

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/169-pentax-full-frame/246917-does-my-m42-...ploration.html

so far I think the argument that Pentax lenses are not ready for FF is untrue.

I found focusing the fa43 not the best experience. Smooth but not damped. Took beautiful photos though.

Focus peaking can be turned on or off via the function menu or a custom button.

Focus magnification isn't automatic with manual lenses. Can be assigned to a custom button.

Here are a few quick photos of the a7+novo+FA 77mm combo, next to the K-5+FA 31mm.

Also, I used my kitchen scale to weigh a few of the various combos (camera+battery+hood, no lens caps):

a7+novoflex+FA 31mm: 923g
a7+novoflex+FA 43mm: 761g
a7+novoflex+FA 77mm: 866g

k5+31mm: 1096g
k5+43mm: 934g
k5+77mm: 1030g

And, for additional reference:

a7+Sony FE 35mm SEL35F28Z: 619g
a7+Sony FE 55mm SEL55F18Z: 810g

In the photos of the K-5, I have a couple 58mm rings (no glass) on the 31mm for a bit of extra protection. This combo doesn't vignette on the APS-C K-5, but I have to take them off when using the 31mm on the FF a7 in order to avoid vignetting. I took off the rings when weighing the K-5+31mm. Also, my 43mm has the DA 40mm hood on it, so the listed weight above will vary slightly from one with the native lens hood.

While I really like the photos produced by the Pentax FA limited lenses on the A7 (and LOVE the limited lenses themselves), since getting the native mount FE 35mm and 55mm, I mostly use those instead of the Pentax limiteds. The a7 native mount FE lenses are amazing lenses and produce fantastic photos, like the Pentax limiteds, but with the native mount lenses I'm able to use autofocus and there is little to no CA to deal with (unlike with the Pentax limiteds). In addition, the native combos are smaller and weigh less. If using manual focus, though, the Pentax limiteds are the way to go. Manual focus with the Sony lenses (focus by wire) just don't feel right to me.

camerons already commented on focus peaking and magnification, so I'll just add that I've turned on peaking, and set magnification to the C1 button on the a7. I never really used manual focus before picking up the a7, so I don't have much of a basis to make comparisons. However, with peaking and magnification on the a7, using manual focus is a breeze. When I really need to ensure I have accurate focus, I use the magnification feature of the a7 to make sure exactly what I want is in focus without fail.

Great post. The weight comparisons are good to know.
