Full-frame standard budget zoom F mount?

I'm in a pickle... I only have primes for my D800 kit and I'm going to be shooting for a biking magazine article this weekend and realize that a 28-70mm zoom could probably be the most useful item in my kit. However I'm changing jobs right now and very very limited on funds, $500 is kind of the budget which rules out the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 VC that I want to fill this role.

I essentially have the option of the 28-85 f3.5-4.5 from Nikon, or the 28-75mm f2.8 from Tamron. Both are similar in price.

Can anyone compare the two for me and tell me which one is better in terms of AF speed, sharpness, contrast?

Thanks

If worse comes to worse I will use my K5/K3 combo with the DA*16-50 and DA10-17 fisheye. However I'm sure the DA*16-50 AF will not keep up with cyclist.

would also look at an UWA zoom if its possible in the budget and I would use my 50mm otherwise.

No credit card.

I do that on purpose so I don't get into trouble...

Anyone use the 18-35 3.5-4.5 from Nikon? The new version?

I can't give you an objective comparison as I've never used the Nikon lens, but I've had a used 28-75 Tammy (screw drive w/aperture ring) for almost two years now with my D700 and, generally speaking, see no reason to upgrade/update unless it fails.

Hopefully someone can tell you how it holds up on a higher res sensor.
