Tamron new 150-600mm initial testing

The Tamron $1100 150-600mm super-telephoto zoom was released into the wild in the US and Europe on Friday.

Some interesting user shots have been posted at the Fred Miranda thread that is worthwhile reading.

The thoughtful Roger Cicala at pntrs.com/t/TUJGRktHSkJHRkpISUVCRkpOSkVN?url=LensRentals.com published his initial comparison among the old Tamron 200-500mm, the Bigma, and the Canon 100-400mm L lenses. A note at the end is his speculation that the newer Nikon 80-400mm zoom would rank with the Canon 100-400L.

In summary, all these lenses are about the same; of course the variables in the actual shooting environment are so great with longer lenses that YMMV.

That said, a decent zoom that reaches 600mm for $1100 is quite a statement and I'm glad I've had one on pre-order for EOS-mount.

It's a damn shame that Tamron didn't release this in K-mount. It would seem perfect for Pentax buyers.

Hi

The only lens company which looks like will make it to the top is Sigma. They are versatile and making great progress in terms of R&D.

All my future lenses would be Sigma if they keep their pricing strategy.

Cheers!

Another subjective review, that I find insightful. The shooter calls it a "game-changer."

It's a beast.... and in the long end it's 6.3. but 600 at F.6.3 is nothing to sneeze at.

If I wanted to get this lens to experiment with, what Nikon crop body has sensor performance similar to K-5 that I could get?

I believe the Nikon D7000 is the closest to the K-5. If I recall correctly, I don't think the Nikon version of this lens will be out until the end of March. I expect mine to arrive by week's end or so and will post some shots and thoughts a few days thereafter.

Tamron 150-600

I picked up a nice Nikon D300 and ordered the Tamron 150-600 about two weeks ago. I just can't be a canon people. I am also renting the Tokina 12-28mm F4 for a couple of weeks to check it out. I think thios would be a great combo for landscape and Wildlife.

If it is close to their 12-24mm, then it should be a winner. I put that on my 5D MKiii yesterday and found it non-vignetting usable from 20-24mm which I was happy for. There is a shortage of high-quality ultra-wide-angle zooms in EOS mount for FF bodies. Nothing like the Nikon 14-24mm.

Since I already had Canon bodies, it was irresistible to me. I plan on using it for perched or more static birds, though I'll try it on BIFs of course and would be thrilled to get decent results. Due to its size, wide range, and being a third-party lens, my expectations are lower for BIFs; I just don't think it will match the 100-400mm L that way, but we'll see.

I'm looking on the local craigslist for a suitable Nikon body myself, I also prefer not to have to use Canon
