Thom Hogan Reviews A7/r

Sony A7 and A7r Review | Sans Mirror ? mirrorless, interchangeable lens cameras | Thom Hogan

Regarding the lossy compression of the RAW files, which he contends actually does effect IQ, i would not be happy about that if I shelled out that money thinking that i was getting D800E performance.

I would take the D800E over both the 645D and A7r

Many people don't want a huge D800E hanging from their neck all day long and like the fact that any DSLR lens works with the A7r.

For a compact camera it takes fantastic 36mp images that 99.9% of people will not tell the difference between the A7r , D800E or 645D images :

Yeah, we know your story. Every day now.

Let's look again when we can compare 2014 CMOS technology to 2014 CMOS technology to 2013 CMOS technology instead of claiming 2009 CCD technology is a fair comparison. Oh wait. I thought it was cell phones.

Actually, the way I see it, your image actually is a strong statement in favor of Pentax leqdership in IQ.

At what cost ? How many here has the money for a 645D body ? Who makes the Ricoh/Pentax 2014 645D sensor ?

A7R is still a pig-ugly camera though. I'd certainly go with the D800E and 645D in that department. Most NEX's and Cybershots look much better than A7, so we know Sony can do it.

99% of the population are not buying full frame cameras. Those that do buy full frame are more discerning than those that would buy a Rebel with the 2 kit lenses.
It's a shame that Sony cannot get out of their own sensors what Nikon and Pentax can.

It's a shame that Canon, Nikon or Pentax don't have a camera under $11,000 that shoots 4K (4096x2160) video like the Panasonic GH4 that I ordered today.

Don't really understand how Panasonic came into the discussion, nor the 645D.
Don't understand how shooting video came into the discussion either.

Sony could've had 14-bit lossless RAW which wouldve resulted in higher IQ files, but they didn't, why not?

Most folks are "satisfied" with an APS-C SLR or mirrorless option. Those who want full frame performance often want longer glass as well, which is not going to be a good fit for an A7r body.

As to the whole "any SLR lens works on it" line, any SLR lens will work on it, with an adapter and with manual focus. I, personally, prefer to have a small line up of nice, auto focus lenses that I actually know and use. Obviously people differ, but having a lot more lenses that fit it natively and worked without adapters and lenses that were actually sharp without a lot of computer manipulation would be nice, too.

And 1.5 fps continuous frame rate (4 fps without focus/exposure changes).
