Lumix LX5, but someone nicked it.

Sony RX100 II, Fuji X20 or Lumix LF1 or LX7 are worth looking at.

The LX7 with fast zoom and 1080p60 for $299 is a great buy .

And if you want a great buy in a pocket size superzoom with 24-480mm eqiv optical powerzoom lens and 1080p60 video for $161.99 get the ZS20.

Personally I'd go for the X20 because of the X-Trans II CMOS sensor and the OVF.

If you like shooting 28mm FoV, the Ricoh GR can't be beat. The lens is amazingly sharp even wide open. I was shocked how sharp this thing is at 16MP.

If you prefer a zoom, you may want to wait for the Canon G1X Mk II. It's got a 1.5" type sensor with a fast zoom. 24mm - 120mm equivalent FoV at F/2 to F/3.9. Released next month for $800.

3 different patterns

From what I read there are different options:

Sub 400$ compacts (Canon S1XX, Panasonic ZS20)

High performance compacts, 800$ range (Ricoh GR, Sony RX100)

Micro 4/3 or similar (Pentax Q, Panasonic , Sony NEX, Canon G1X) While these may have better IQ, they will have a hard time fitting in the chest pocket of a winter coat. It all depends of what you consider travelling light. I would not have one of these with me at all times. I hade the choice of the Canon S100 and the G13 I think at the time. Basically the same thing in a different body. The size of the S100 made me choose.

You know what they say: The best camera is the one you have with you. Or the one you left at home, depending on who is telling.

Nobody said a waterproof camera... not enough IQ for the price paid? I feel that way.

None of those are better or even equal to the GR.

In the sub $400 category I would strongly recommend the LX7.

Film Lives!

Olympus XA2, XA3, Minox 35ML or Sears mini 35 (aka Ricoh FF-1s)

+1

For outright image quality with a wide-angle, I don't think anything APS or smaller can compete with the GR.

This last option seems nice (Panasonic TZ60). I'll look into that when my S100 dies. On the other hand, I can buy a brand new S110 for real cheap...

Anybody know of a good compact that is also weather sealed. Not indestructible like the WG-3 but just enough to be safe in the rain and at the beach? A mix between the Ricoh GR and the WG-3?
