Take anywhere camera

I absolutely love my Pentax K-30... but in some cases it does not fit and the cell-phone just does not cut it. I was wondering what other camera you guys are using and for what reasons?

I have my Canon S100 on my almost always because it fits in my winter jacket (in a plastic bag). It is winter, i have my winter coat, and the camera follows. Skiing, snow-shoeing... it follows me. I also bring my compact in the hunting season, the mirror of a DSLR is just too loud, event the lens on my compact feels like a ruckus when your are trying to be completely silent.

The only time i try to keep it at home (I know it is a bad idea) is when it's raining. I take pictures, watch rain drop slide in with the lens and fear for the worst. Up to now, keeping the camera in a sealed bag with a desiccant seems to save it.

I loved my old S95 the best. I gave it to my daughter, got an S100, gave that to my wife and jumped on the discounted MX-1, which so far I regret. The beauty of the Canons was size and low light performance. For some reason I haven't been able to coax equal performance out of the MX-1. I think it's real hard to do better than a Canon S

Ricoh GR has very similar weight and size as canon S compacts and the same sensor as K-30.. Focal length would be the same as canon S90/95 (28mm) and although f/2.8 instead of f/2.0, high iso is that much better on the larger sensor.. I am starting to considering it after seeing I use my s100 at 24 or 28mm almost exclusively...

I have a K20D and an S100...

Just went to Hawaii and took S100 - left K20D home...

I like the S100 - like that I can slip in pocket and carry anywhere...

I'm sure the RX100 is better, but I got the S100 a couple of months ago for 189 - couldn't get an RX100 for anything near that...

I'd have gotten the MX-1 but knew I wouldn't carry it everywhere...

I'm also a pretty stoked user of the Ricoh GR (APS version).

My main kit is an EM5 with a whole bunch of primes, and I got the GR as a go-everywhere cam. It fits in jeans pockets, it has outstanding IQ (very good sensor and the best wide-angle lens I've used) and it has one of the best user interfaces I've experienced, especially for a compact.

Downside? It's a 28mm equ., which may or may not be your thing.

I've got a 365 project going on with the GR here: above me only sky | An exploration of place – 365 days with the Ricoh GR

The new Panasonic GM1 is the size of the Pentax Q but has a much larger m4/3rd sensor and lenses are much smaller than APS-C lenses.

Another happy GR user here. IQ of this little beauty is better than my K5ii + FA31, handling is suprisingly good. A well thought out design. Easy to take with you anywhere and forget you have it, it's so small. Perfect pocket camera IMO.

For me it's a Q with the 01 lens is perfect. Small body, small lens!

The Ricoh GR is like having a DSLR in your pocket. Apart from the CoolpixA, it's by far the best pocket-able camera on the market.

My take anywhere camera for the past 2 years has been my NEX-5n with the 16-50 powerzoom compact lens. Size for quality cant be beaten. When I want better IQ, I just attach my fast 35 or 50 mm primes to it and it performs like a champ. I reckon the new 3N with its even smaller footprint may be a good choice and VERY reasonably priced at the moment for around $300 with the 16-50.

I agree, the Sony 3N is the smallest APS-C mirrorless camera with kit zoom lens that is not much larger than the Q with kit zoom lens .

My Canon S95.
Small, light, well built, versatile, shots in RAW, good low light performance etc.
I like it precisely because it's not an interchangeable lens camera and so completely self contained - grab and go.

I'd like something like the GR with a short zoom range lens that folds in pretty flat like the Canon Powershot cameras.

If you're okay with the focal length, you can't beat the Ricoh GR for a pocket camera.
