Hi,

I thought I'd let you know, in case you're not familiar with it yet, there's another long running activity here on the forum celebrating point & shoot cameras: the point & shoot "competition". This months theme is: a summer vacation feeling.
Perhaps an idea to join in

I went for a walk this afternoon, past a valley called Waldridge Dene (I live in Waldridge Parish) where I used to play and ride my little junior-sized motor-cross bike when I was a young lad (40+ years ago!). Back then, significant chunks of it were cleared and there were lots of folks who used to ride their bikes there. It was great fun. For many years now, though, motorcycles haven't been allowed there - I think because it's a conservation area - and it has become a sort of country park, albeit a natural one that isn't tended in any way. It's pretty wild and all of the previously-cleared areas are now fully populated with good-sized trees again. The next sunny day we get, I'm going to hike through it... It looks very lush and inviting, viewed from the edge of the valley. Photo below shows just one small section:

And, whilst walking along, I picked up this conifer cone for possible use in a future photo. Haven't decided how I'll use it yet. For now, a very simple monochrome pseudo-macro shot:

Both photos taken with the Canon PowerShot A1200, shot raw using CHDK and processed in RawTherapee...

Great stuff with the A1200, Mike. If you hid the exif on that pine cone shot I bet you could easily convince people it had been taken with a DSLR. I finally got around to reassembling my A1200 after taking it apart a couple of months ago to clean the sensor, but I seem to have mislaid the lens. I'd been playing around with the idea of adapting it to take interchangeable lenses, and I think I might have accidentally binned the tiny little original lens somewhere along the line. Oops.

The good news is, a replacement A1200 won't cost much. In fact, if I remember correctly, one of my sisters has got one that she never uses. . .

(Sadly the idea of adapting the A1200 for interchangeable lenses didn't work because the firmware throws a hissy fit when it can't detect the zoom as attached. It was fun trying though, and structurally it would have been completely possible if not for the firmware glitch that was still present with CHDK too.)

Thanks, David I'm having lots of fun with the A1200... awesome little camera, and the image quality is great with a little careful post-processing applied to the raw output. There's a lot more detail in the raw files than is initially apparent.

Sorry to hear that - but, as you say, cheap enough to replace. I notice there's one on eBay right now with a couple of days left to go... it has two bids on it, but is currently still dirt cheap.
