Compact cameras seem to have been on my mind recently after the subject has come up in a few recent threads around the forum. So I thought I'd post some shots with the wonderful little Canon A1200 from back in the days when it was the only digital camera I owned (I was still using film for most stuff back then).

Awesome, wall-worthy photos, David - beautifully composed and skilfully captured. In terms of image quality, at this sort of reproduction size on my 17" laptop and 24" desktop screens, I could believe they're from a much larger sensor camera.

I have a bit of a thing for digital compact cameras. I realise most of them are very limited compared to modern DSLR and mirrorless cameras, but I have so many photos taken with compacts that mean a lot to me. Even now, I occasionally shoot a little 2010-vintage Pentax H90, just for fun. In reasonably good lighting, it takes very good photos.

Whilst I'm sure modern smartphone cameras are capable of surprisingly good results, I like the feel of a "real" camera with a proper shutter button a buttons I can click

My first outing today with the Canon PowerShot A1200 I recently bought...

These two shots were taken at Herrington Country Park, just a few miles from my home. It's a lovely place, built on the site of an old colliery (the last mining company to operate there were granted their license on the condition that they would fund the landscaping once operations ceased).

Shot in raw DNG format using CHDK, and processed in RawTherapee...

Very nice Mike. I've been meaning to give CHDK a try with my old Powershots, but the images you and Dave have posted have finally convinced me!

Thanks, Paul It's definitely worth trying. There are quite a few adjustments required in raw development to produce good-looking photos from the A1200 - camera colour profile, tone curve, colour noise reduction, raw sharpening, local contrast, chromatic aberration removal and lens distortion correction - but most are applicable to every photo and can therefore be saved and applied as a preset. And now that I'm getting used to processing A1200 raw images, I'm very encouraged by its capabilities. Definitely a real photographic tool and not just the curio I suspected it might be. It's capable of far more than the in-camera JPEG engine delivers (though even straight-out-of-camera JPEGs are pretty nice)

Oh boy, I've been looking for a thread like this one. Compact small sensor cameras are my secret love affair. There is no better compliment then when someone comments on your photos and says "you must have a really nice camera", and you respond with "thank you, my Canon A700 is a real work horse"
