OnePlus launches high-end 4K smartphone at bargain price

QuoteQuote:
OnePlus is a new smartphone maker based in China founded by a former Oppo executive. Today the company has released its first high-end smartphone, which is simply called the One. With its 2.5 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 SoC, 5.5-inch 1080p screen, 3GB of RAM and a 13MP camera, the One's specifications are on a similar level as other flagship devices released this year, such as the Sony Xperia Z2, HTC One M8 or Samsung Galaxy S5.

However, the One is quite unusual in two ways: its price and its operating system. At $299/€269 for the 16GB model and $349/€299 for the 64GB variant, the One is a significantly better deal than the competing devices mentioned above and even cheaper than Google's Nexus 5.

With a 13MP Sony sensor, F2.0 aperture, 4K video and 120 fps slow motion at 720p, the One offers very solid camera specs. With a price point that compares favorably to many mid-level devices the One could become the device of choice for many mobile photographers who prefer Google's Android over other mobile operating systems. The new phone will initially be available in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, the UK and the US. No official release date has been given yet.
Key Photographic/Video Specifications:

13MP Sony Exmor CMOS sensor
F2.0 aperture
6 lens elements
Dual-LED flash
5MP front camera
4K video
720p slow-motion video at 120 fps

Other Specifications:

2.5 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 SoC
CyanogenMod 11S OS (based on android 4.4)
5.5-inch 1080p display, 401 ppi
3GB of RAM
16 or 64Gb storage
3,100 mAh battery
OnePlus launches high-end smartphone at bargain price: Connect

$349 for a 64GB 4K no contract smartphone with 3,100 mAh battery and $99.95 for the 6000mAh powerstation PRO for a total of $448.95 would give you a high-end 4K smartphone with battery power to shoot 4K video and 13mp stills all day long.

Was it intentional to post the Juice Pack video?

On a video forum someone said the following :
" Fail, as a video camera:
1. No micro sd slot.
2. No replaceable battery"

So I replied :
$349 for a 64GB 4K smartphone with 3,100 mAh battery and $99.95 for the 6000mAh powerstation PRO for a total of $448.95 , I don't see a problem IMHO.

It's another 'race' type thing. 4K is a buzzword that will sell heaps of sh*t, but when people want to start editing their footage to make something watchable/keepable from all of their clips..well.
Besides, who wants YouTube filling with 4K vertical shaky-cam clips

4K is 8mp images vs only 2mp 1080p images so it's amazing how many blind bats there are out there that can't see the difference.

I've been a Android user/hacker from it's inception. I HATE when batteries are not removable and when there is no expandable memory.
That said I'm completely enamored with this phone (because I'm cheap) and I will be purchasing one once they're available.

Regarding the Morphie, it's too expensive. I have a generic battery pack about the same size with 20,000mAh that cost me $30.
I'd only buy the Morphie if I needed waterproofing, but when the phone is not waterproof, why would the battery pack need to be?

Hey, i understand what you're stating but i guess we all have got to remember, the whole concept of sharing media contents via YouTube and Facebook was laughed and mocked at when it was pretty new. Look at where they are now and look at how much content they have, useful or not.

Ultimately, professionals and avid hobbyists makes up perhaps the first 20% of any AV industry, the remaining 80% are the normal Tom, Dick, or Harry who looks up at the 20% and attempts to do so too.
And that, my friend, is where the money is...

Never mess with technology, it just gonna keep growing.. LoL! Embrace it and use it to your best advantage and be the first 20%..

Hey I'm not disputing the success of sharing video clips online, you misrepresent my comments there.
My point is that 4K resolution is not necessary for cat videos or Russian dash cam car smash clips.
I mean, do you have a 4K screen on your smartphone, phablet, tablet, notebook or desktop?
You're never seeing 4K footage at 4K unless you do. So what's the point?
And try editing 4K footage on an average consumer PC?

Remember, bigger isn't better. Only 'better' is better

I agree Steve. 4K is still in it's infancy, but then again so was 720p and 1080p not too long ago. 4K will not be a "necessary" feature until screens and processors catch up.

The point is I prefer looking at 8mp images compared to 2mp images today and I have two 30" 2560x1600 monitors that I use with my PC and MacPro along with a 4K UHD TV coming next week. BTW do people only view the 24mp image on the back of the K-3 3" LCD ? There is no need to have a 4K display on a smartphone since the 4K video will be displayed on a much larger display. I watch 4K youtube videos in 1440p on my 30" monitors and they look better than 1080p.

"The OnePlus One features a Snapdragon 801 2.5GHz quad-core processor, like the one powering the Samsung Galaxy S5, 3GB of RAM, a 5.5-inch IPS 1080p display protected by Gorilla Glass 3, a 13MP rear-facing camera supplied by Sony capable of recording 4K video and a 5MP front-facing shooter. It features a 3100mAh battery, offers dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0, plus a wide range of GSM, WCDMA and LTE band support."
The OnePlus One Offers Top-Tier Android Phone Specs At $299 | TechCrunch

i hope that that it's being sold off-contract.

What looks better on your computer screen, an 8MB JPEG compressed to say a 60% quality level or a 2MP image at near 100% quaility?

That's kind of how it is with 4K video and streaming on the web. The pipe is only so big so you really have to cut the sound quality and the bit rate down on 4K to stream it, in general. Whereas with 720/1080p you could have much better sound quality and less compression for the same data rate.

I've seen 1080p look that good if not better on my computer screen. And no way will any hosting service give you high quality sound on 4K. That is the first thing they cut down when you upload your video. They do that to 1080p already.

I know you did not watch the 4K version on a large 4K display so what you just posted means nothing.
