If they produced one with a focus motor, like the Pentax AF 1.7x, they'd have something really neat.

Not sure how long this has been available, but has anyone picked one up yet? It's not too expensive, and if there's a chance the blue dot is gone, it'd be worth it to me.

How close? I heard turbo or speed boosted lenses are sharp in the middle, soft on the edges, and show increased distortion and PF. I've seen some pretty horrible examples of flare (so-called "blue dot").

I wonder how much of the above is due to performance of the main lens, poor coatings, no lens hood? What do users think about performance?

EDIT I just read this post and a few responses. It seems there are significant penalties for the boost:

I just ordered one this morning. I have buyers' remorse already:

NEW Pentax PK Focal Reducer Speed Booster Adapter TO Sony NEX 5 6 7 FS700 FS100 | eBay

All metal structure, with excellent opticals (4 elements/2 groups)

What it does:
•reduce the focal length (by 0.72x wider)
•Ex. 50mm lens on NEX with the adpater, eff. focal length is 50mm x 1.5(crop) x 0.72 = 54mm
•effectively increases the maximum aperture of the lens by 1 stop
•(in other words, under the same aperture, you can use faster shutter speed (by 1 stop).

and this new version is made to overcome the a)blue spot b)slight green tint issues in the old version

the edge fall-off is still to be expected though, this is by nature, not a design issue

What it does not:
•there is no electronic integration, no auto focusing

Someone has. There are even sample images using Pentax glass right here in this forum, complete with low-light flare test:
