I looked in my back yard and thought, “that’s a funny-looking knot on that tree. Wait a minute — is that a bushy tail?”

I didn't think I posted this one. Taken in August this year, just before I got sick and couldn't hold the camera steady.

Nice photo - both Cardinals and Squirrels like sunflower seeds a lot!

Every year, as nature begins to replenish her many foods, I stop filling the feeders, because 'my' birds and squirrels have to remember how to provide for themselves. That was especially true of this lady - viewed from the side, she was very close to delivering her pups, and she would need to teach them how to gather on their own. So, I was very sad with her as she discovered that there were no peanuts on the ground and none in the feeder - so she eventually ran off into the woods .... not to be seen again by me ..... unless she or her pups returned this year.

My wife and I agreed that the weather was such that I should not feed anything before Thanksgiving. On Thanksgiving, I filled the Squirrel Feeder with peanuts-in-the-shell and the Bird Feeder with Sunflower Seeds ...... and virtually no one came. Perhaps they were celebrating Thanksgiving somewhere else.

The next morning when we got up, the Squirrel Feeder was empty! Even though it was "Black Friday", we are retired and do not haunt the stores, so this was some time after sunrise. I am guessing that either the neighborhood racoon cleaned up overnight or the deer came around sunrise, but the peanuts were gone, so I put regular "Squirrel and Critter Food" in the Squirrel Feeder. This time, several Squirrels did come; after scouting the area, they took turns eating from the Squirrel Feeder. They dropped more than they ate, so over time both migrated to the bottom of the tree on which the Squirrel Feeder was located.

My post yesterday included only the first morning hours of Black Friday, with the squirrels having discovered that they could both share in the feeder if they ate off the ground where much of the food ended up anyway.

After the squirrels reached this arrangement, the Blue Jays {who also love peanuts in the shell} met - and saw their opportunity. The Squirrel Feeder was empty by shortly after noon, but for the remainder of the time the Feeder had anything, the Jays ate peanuts from the Squirrel Feeder, and kicked the other food down to the actual Squirrels on the ground.
