Cleanup crew. Rarely a chipmunk will peer up at the feeder, or scamper up a nearby tiny sapling, but mostly they're content foraging on the ground.

Good to keep the ground clean - keeps it from attracting vermin.

Right! Don't want the yard infested with rodents.

The Ermine, Pine Marten, Merlin, Owls , Shrikes and Red Fox, never complain about too many rodents.

A red fox once chased our cat right up to the pet door on the deck, presumably having leapt over the 40 inch fence that surrounds the grassy area beyond that serves as a pen for the dog. Annabelle (the cat) has a few spots where she can get through the fence, but she is small and those passages are tight for her. I doubt a fox could get through one of them. BTW, when Annabelle got through the pet door into the safety of the sun room, she turned to face the fox who was just outside the adjacent all-glass slider door for humans. It was tossup who had the bigger tail.

Yet another "old" photo - a squirrel last year deciding if the coast is clear before looking for missed food
{we do have several feral cats in the neighborhood and two noisy dogs next door}.

I've been trying to get some images for a few days. After years of posing, Mama Squirrel and King Squirrel are gone. There are two new ones, but for squirrels they are incredibly camera shy. Since we had an Ermine hanging around for while, I'm pretty sure their shyness is why they are the two (of about 12) that are left. I'm going to have to focus on getting images of them. I used to shoot Mama and King just sitting there waiting to be photographed when there was a pause in the bird action. I guess we all take our turn being fresh out of squirrels to shoot.

I thought you were going to conclude your post “take our turn being celebrities and being someone else’s dinner.”
