As I saw this situation develop, I thought the Squirrel on the branch might pull the tail of the Squirrel on the feeder - but nope, apparently he could recognize seniority when he saw it.

My wife calls this the "barberpole maneuver".

This morning I saw a Squirrel eating something frozen;
it seemed like the wrong season for a Popsicle.

Winter Feeding

The ice storm here has broken a ton of trees (Live Oaks and Cedars that still have foliage), then 6" of snow covered the ground feed (and froze our water supply pipes). So these ladies are dining on the fallen treetops that are now within reach. I know they are kinda large for squirrels, but they are also our common backyard denizens!

When I showed a picture of deer here once, Rupert accepted them as 'honorary squirrels'.

We don't see a scene like this very often.
Usually the deer visit around dawn/dusk, while the squirrels are here in the middle of the day and have taken off before dusk,
but both showed up at lunchtime.
They weren't bothering each other, but squirrels expecting to eat off the ground later will be disappointed.

I saw Super Dave of the squirrel world today. He survived this stunt.

knowing the rough size of the squirrel and using a field of view calculator I am about 35 meters from the squirrel.

Squirrels usually stare at me from 20 feet up; this one kept staring at the base of the tree.
I don't know why - I neither saw or heard anything.

The squirrel feeder is only about five feet off the ground,
but this guy seemed unwilling to climb the last few inches until he had checked that it still had something for him.

During the coldest months, I was putting about 1 litter into the squirrel feeder and perhaps .8 litter into the bird feeder.
Now, I'm down to about .2 liter into the bird feeder, but the Blue Jays keep putting corn on to the ground in their eternal search for peanuts at the squirrel feeder, so I probably need to put less into it.

In any case, by the time the squirrels get there, most of the "squirrel & critter" feed left is on the ground, so this guy knew exactly where to go to find breakfast when he was late.
