My parents built a garden area at one time, but as the trees grew, it eventually became too shady to grow anything.
Before the trees leaf out - or after they fall - I can see the squirrels making the use of the timbers still there.
Two pictures from last Winter early Spring.

When the weather turned colder, my wife would have oatmeal with pieces of apple. and I would toss the cores out for the squirrels.

Sometimes they would {hopefully gratefully} eat them, and sometimes they would ignore the food under their noses and look for something even better.

I thought I saw some interesting fungi growing on this tree. It turns out a red squirrel is hoarding butternuts and another is taking them for his own stash. I had to use flash which makes the squirrel look more like a demon than a usual red squirrel.

Notice the nuts high on the left and all the way right. Another pile is on the ground.

1) The leucistic squirrel shades itself while basking after having gorged on seed in the feeder.

2) After it spied me taking shots, it leapt on to the fence to make a getaway, finding the spear tips a bit painful and difficult to maneuver over.

3) And finally finds this method of escape somewhat less tortuous.

That's a dandy set.

I haven’t done any squirrel shots in a while but I hope this small contribution to the thread is appreciated.

It was right in front of my "blind" (basement window just above the lawn) and didn't mind me clicking away, though I was quite afraid that anything I do might scare it away.

Made it to the top of the bird feeder tree. Now, which feeder to raid first?

My neighbor has been feeding the birds and, most recently, the squirrels. He even named a couple of the squirrels, and gained their confidence, eventually getting them to eat from his hand.

The squirrels became so bold the started coming in the door of his house when it was open.

Well, the other day he discovered the had gotten into the engine bay of his pickup and began harvesting the under hood insulation for nesting material, and chewing on wires.

So he got a trap, caught them and took them about 15 miles away to a county park and released them.

Fortunately, ours seem to have retained a fear of mankind - they typically vamoose when I open the deck door - even though I do feed them regularly, typically U.S. Thanksgiving to Easter. We did need to have our roof replaced after the roof started leaking into our walk-in closet after one of them gnawed on the ‘tar’ around a bathroom vent - that would have needed to happen soon regardless.

Yes, squirrels eat various things I would be cautious of.
I wonder whether they learn from their mothers - or we just lose some.
