Red squirrel collecting seeds under the feeder this morning.

About 14 feet from the window, and cropped down. EXIF says 400, but it was actually the K 200mm lens at f8. I forgot to change the SR setting when I swapped lenses .

I got no squirrel shots......they are on strike for better dining pleasures during the holidays. Otis wants his own turkey and dressing.....and 100# of imported gourmet nuts.

But...I can enjoy what you guys post!

I don't have any squirrel shots either. They've not been coming down to eat lately. Staying high up in the trees and chattering to each other but no sign of them on the ground.

this was an early iteration of a "squirrel proof" feeder

it actually turned out to be a great idea
the squirrels got so much to eat that they longer fit through the grate

aslyfox...Otis's turkey dinner with all the fixin's seemed a giant step from his kind's herbivorous past hence the evolution reference

I was actually quoting the squirrel,

you can see how his tail is forming a reversed Question Mark

I'll pass on the info when I see him again

what about the dogs with thumbs???

now they can pick locks and such

Since most of the birds come to the feeders, the squirrels also come but I feed them on the ground, throwing Sunflower seeds out and peanuts occasionally. It's easy for me to get photos of all kinds of birds. The squirrels, feeding on the ground for the last 7 years seem to be okay with that but I'd like to get some shots of them doing something besides sitting up or sneaking through the grass to feed.

Give the squirrels something like this to play on.

Never underestimate hungry squirrels!

Otis advises....."Got dogs? Send them out to us with a nice coat of brown gravy!"

we had an irish wolfhound that came from pack of coyote hunters out west

sweetest beast I have ever lived with but she also had a very strong prey drive
at the same time we had an ex-racing greyhound

those two relished the challenge of correcting the antagonistic behavior of our local tree rats

our other dogs could tree but not catch squirrels
however those bushy little critters (initially) didn't count on a 150 pound furball whose first step measured over fifteen feet and a forty pound blur who loved nothing better than to apprehend trespassers
as far as I know they never killed a squirrel but you'd see them carrying outraged rodents around in their mouths

after a couple of months the squirrels maintained a perimeter outside the fence
if the dogs were out the sanctity of the boundary was seldom violated

I was surprised at the level of combativeness squirrels possess
I've seen squirrels shed blood over a special peanut

but that level of cooperation is amazing...if it's all true
