Yes he does, doesn't he! Otis said it is refreshing to read his posts instead of mine which he says are mostly illiterate.

Hey Paul...can you PM Aslyfox and give him directions on how to get the Otis Appreciation logo in his signature. I'd do it...but can't recall just how it is done.....and being illiterate and old too, doesn't help.

Best Regards!

Click on "My account" at top right of the screen, then select "edit signature". You will get this screen. Follow instructions at the bottom to upload the official Otis badge file from your PC. That's it!

how gracious of you two!

I will suspend an incipient sense of trepidation and accept his award in the spirit in which it was given

he means well...right?
this isn't a rodent's ruse...a squirrel's subterfuge?

that's right...I remember now...suspension of paranoia...only the best of intentions

thanks!

"Pinky and the Brain" are secretly controlled by Otis

Pinky: Gee, Brain. What are we going to do tonight?
The Brain: The same thing we do every night, Pinky. Try to take over the world.

Pinky and the Brain (TV Series 1995?1998) - IMDb

don't tell anyone

you have been warned.

Damn handsome little guy! Is that a jungle he is in?

Happiness and peanuts are interchangeable words for squirrels......

Does anyone know what squirrels find so appealing about Japanese Maples? This tree sometimes has three or four nibbling at it, yet seems pretty bare....

Well, as long as there is no lasting damage, I don't mind if they indulge in a bit o' the leaf. I was young once, my own self.

He looks plenty content!

That's what Otis says whenever they catch a raccoon and grill him!

There is a constant battle here over peanuts with the squirrels and Jays.....Jays having "air superiority" usually win the battle.

On occasion, I have seen a big Jay peck the head of a squirrel that tried to beat him to the bounty. It is hilarious and the squirrel gets madder than hell!

if you're really curious you might taste a little bit...seriously

look to where they are chewing

often you will find them munching on the ends of branches...the newer growth tastes different than the larger branches...if I remember my childhood correctly

if they are just nibbling the outer bark I don't know...unless it's willow...in which case Otis's buds probably are hungover
if, however, they are going for the inner bark i'd guess it was sweet

also when the feeders aren't out in the neighborhood squirrels will strip the bark from cottonwoods first, then start in on the elms
I do know the ants love elm sap and will travel great distances to get it

as far as damage goes, check to see if they are ringing the branch...if so it will often die off beyond the girdling

my guess is that fear is wasted effort at this juncture

I've never been good at resignation
perhaps acceptance is in order

the only bright side to all this is we're talking about a texas squirrel
territorial expansion may be stymied by climatic realities
it is consistently colder as one ventures north
Yes, I'm not very concerned. The conditions this far north would be very unnerving to a Texas squirrel. Today I went out looking for the locals, and I could find only this guy {you'll notice a few snowflakes sticking to him in the second image}. I'm guessing that the others had done a better job of watching the Weather Channel than I did. To show you what kind of day this was, I had to push my K-30 to ISO=3200 to get these.

Are you absolutely certain that Otis can't control the weather

global warming is real, could Otis be behind it all?

I think diverting Otis to the source of peanuts is the key

"Peanuts are grown in the warm climates of Asia, Africa, Australia, and North and South America. India and China together account for more than half of the world's production. The United States has about 3% of the world acreage of peanuts, but grows nearly 10% of the world's crop because of higher yields per acre. Other major peanut growing countries include Senegal, Sudan, Brazil, Argentina, South Africa, Malawi, and Nigeria.

In the U.S. these are the major peanut producing states: VIRGINIA, NORTH CAROLINA, SOUTH CAROLINA, GEORGIA, FLORIDA, ALABAMA, TEXAS, OKLAHOMA, NEW MEXICO, MISSISSIPPI.

In the United States, ten states grow 99% of the U. S. peanut crop: Georgia (which grows about 42% of all U. S. peanuts), followed by Texas, Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Mississippi, Virginia, Oklahoma and New Mexico. These states are grouped into three regions. The Georgia-Florida-Alabama-Mississippi region (Southeast) grows mostly the medium-kernel Runner peanuts. The Southwest region (Texas-Oklahoma-New Mexico) grows Spanish, Runner and some Virginia type varieties. The Virginia-Carolinas area grows mostly the large-kernel Virginia type peanut. About 68% of all U. S. peanuts are grown in the Southeast, with the Virginia/Carolina area accounting for 13% and the Southwest, about 18%."
