(if the images are good indicators)

our black squirrels have two possible origins (according to our wildlife mgmt. people)
iowa...melanistic grey squirrels
Kansas...melanistic fox squirrels

we've had both kinds in the neighborhood
both are noticeably smaller that our natives

I suspect you have your answer and it is gratifying to know that everything isn't BIGGER in texas
reportedly we do have black squirrels in Topeka, I have never seen them however.

Great colors, great pose, sharp and I adore the hair on the ears.

Wonderful shot in every way!
Thank you !
If there were a "squirrel universe" contest, like "miss universe" they would win by far against American squirrels

they are pretty hot but so are Canada's greys
even American greys have a certain insouciance
while allowing for those petite texas exemplars
our fox squirrels look like the front line of football team by comparison

their populations vary a great deal...both in numbers and geography

they are rare here and in the forty years we've lived here have only had one breeding pair
they stayed for a couple of years
one was hit by a car and the other moved on...hopefully emotionally as well as physically

That is pure BS FS! Judges go for the biggest and best bosoms and my squirrels excel in that area....

This old gal could easily walk away with a crown...

When it comes to Mr Universe...let's see your scrawny little guys match this?

Even my little youngsters can shame your best entrants....

Get real FS, your squirrels are lovely, but they are not up to competing with my adorable and well equipped entrants!

Regards!

I was getting prepared for the end of winter

I thought Otis (like all petty tyrants) should be aware that the story doesn't have to end the way we think it does

My wife had cut up an apple to include in our oatmeal this morning, so later in the day I dumped the core on top of the remaining corn in the Squirrel Feeder. Later I looked out and saw that we had a customer {pictures taken through glass door to our deck}

"There's a little more in this corner"

"And a little more in this corner"

"OK, fella, we need more food out here"

{so I hustled out with more corn and a handful of peanuts}

added: this poor animal seems to be terrified of me - as soon as I step out the door, it runs. Looking at the first two pictures I see that both ears are somewhat chewed up, so it may have lived a tough life already.

I like your shots

as far as running away...somewhere, recently, I read that cute little squirrels are responsible for a vey high number of animal bites every year
apparently "don't bite the hand that feeds you" doesn't apply to them

Squirrels are either eating, just got finished eating, are thinking about eating or are dead. There seems to be no "in-between".
