Today I made my first photo with my new-to-me F 70-210, graciously gifted to me by @loveisageless. Rupert knew the best way to test a new lens is to photograph a squirrel!

Cutie that one is. I can't get my squirrels to eat apples but they do love that sap that flows since Rupert told me to spread and watch them come. It's gotten so bad here I've had to start buying it in 4lb cans.

As you can see they love it!

I am thinking of buying some peanut butter to get the local squirrel (or squirrels, might be more than the one I have seen) to visit more often and perhaps to hang around rather than scamper off.
Smooth or crunchy? Please advise.
This one taken in 2015 has nice colouring. Is it something other than a bog standard grey squirrel?
Taken with a Vivitar 300mm with a Vivitar 1.5x teleconverter, not sharp but probably my fault.

Set the can out, they'll probably bathe in it.

That's a fine squirrel image. I just had a mind-flash that we were long overdue for a Rupert comment on all these squirrel images. Made me very sad again.

Well his name is in the thread title.... I was tempted to repost his favourite squirrel image, but hey, life moves on.

That feeder didn't handle the weather here very well, so this year I purchased a new feeder like the first one, with one exception - even I have trouble keeping the roof off, even just for the time to put more seed in..
The next day, the wires supporting the feeder broke, so I spent several hours fixing a new arrangement. If this won't work reliably, I'll have to go back to the post with its ant-squirrel baffle, and the squirrels will have to go back to eating off the ground

We also seem to have a new generation of squirrels; this one seems to be perfecting an acrobatic move of hanging on to the roof with the back feet while scooping up seeds with the front feet.
This seems to be no more bothersome to the songbirds than the starlings and mourning doves are; we'll see if this becomes the new normal.
After watching the squirrel from a different angle today, I realized the stretching down motion seen in the second picture was time to spit out the sunflower seed husk.

Well that's a new one, Mike. I don't believe I've ever seen a rock squirrel. TFS

Btw, on the first one with those branches behind, looks like he has antlers.

They are normally seen on rocky hill sides around rock piles and not in trees. They are large , similar in size to Fox squirrels.

Today the squirrel showed me how to get to the birdfeeder - kind of like a face first trip down a firehouse pole

Yep. They're tricky little guys. Acrobats and tight rope walkers, to get the seed they're not supposed to be getting.

Here are two I got today.

This one looked confused about what he was supposed to be doing.

and this one was just snarfing up the sunflower seeds.
