My niece meets a hungry Grand Canyon ground squirrel. They are not shy at all about begging for handouts

Those squirrels at the Canyon are accomplished beggars - I think they would beg for sport even if they weren't hungry.

I live on a tree lined avenue in an older part of Louisville. Squirrels are plentiful. One squirrel saw me when I came out the front door and started making an unusual noise. As I keep the cameras near the front door it was easy for me to grab the one with 55-300mm and start shooting. Rat Tail was not the least bit alarmed and let me take many pictures.

Another day I was just sitting on the front porch enjoying the weather when I saw this nutter gnawing on something. Again a camera with the 55-300 was near by. Seems at times he/she was offering me a taste.

I have posted the pictures in the reverse order of the captions and I cannot figure how to reverse one or the other on an iPad.

I'm getting ready for them to come around. I cleaned my only window that faces the bird feeders in the backyard yesterday and setup the tripod with the K-50 and 55-300mm WR attached.

I got a couple of shots of one squirrel but haven't uploaded yet. I want to wait til I get a few more shots before taking the card out of the camera. It's a Sandisk 128GB SDXC. Will take a while to fill it up.

The squirrels in our park are wild and you can't get close to them. My best long lens is a Pentax F 80-200 so that's what I use when stalking them. I often use it on a Fujifilm X-T20 body but in truth I get just as many good pictures using my backup K100D. I'm delighted with how well the autofocus works on the old camera. And either I got an especially good example, or the lens is one of the great under-rated optics of the Pentax lineup. This shot taken with K100D, SMC Pentax F 80-200 at 180mm, 1/100s, f/5.6, ISO 200, post-processed in RawTherapee, cropped, Velvia 100 emulation, moderate unsharp mask.

And I got sneaky today after I washed the out side of my windows, I threw some bread, then a few minutes later, I grabbed a solo cup, filled it up with sunflower seeds, walked out in the backyard, checked my brother's window blinds were closed, and they were, I scattered the sunflower seeds, and came inside to wait. I didn't have long before they found the seeds:

This one was taken a few days ago, just after I setup the tripod. I thought I got him looking at me through the window but he must have turned his head just as I press the shutter button.

Brother mentioned the squirrels were in the backyard today. I said oh really, he said yeah. Then a few minutes later I said maybe they had acorns back there they were digging up to which he said he saw them eating a plant one day so they don't always eat acorns. I let the conversation die out and never said another word. So, from now on, I can feed them their favorite food, I just have to make sure brother's blinds are closed when I go out to scatter the seeds. LOL
