Playing around with the Sony A7s (and other toys) last night

Sony invited a group of photographers including myself to dinner last night and brought along all their latest toys for us to play around with.

The star of the show was of course a near-production version of the A7s, but there were a bunch of other stuff as well including the RX100 Mark III, A6000, A77 Mark II, etc. etc. plus some lenses (including the new FE70-200).

I must admit I spent too much time chatting (and eating) rather than taking photos, but I did get to spend some time with the A7s, the A6000 and the RX10. I wanted to try the RX100 Mark III very much but apart from fondling it for a few minutes at the start never had a chance - it was a very popular camera and I never saw it again during the rest of the night.

I spent quite a fair bit of time with the A7s, the FE70-200 lens and the ILCE6000, which are the main things I was considering purchasing. I did play around with the RX10 a fair bit - it was a pleasant surprise. Apart from the size, it handled really well and took great photos. If I had to have only one camera for everything and didn't mind the size this may well be it.

A7s - Sony was mainly promoting it as a low light camera, since it doesn't do 4K capture. I like it a lot - here's an example at ISO40000 - yep that's right one extra zero (photo of Sean Elwood, the Sony product specialist):

Some photos taken on the FE70-200 at ISO6400 :

Optical stabilisation worked really well - 1/15 second:
