Alternative brand to the K3 and DA*300/4 ?

Someone asked me (because there isn't a shop carrying Pentax gear where she lives) to help her find "something like you (me) have" (my gear is the Pentax K5 and the DA*300/4 for most of my photos).
She doesn't want to have to deal with "distance purchases and service" .
She also mentions that a "good" zoom would be great ... but then again she wants quality results. (oxymoron?).

Offered brands: Nikon, Canon

What should she go for at approximately the same price as, let's say, a K3 and DA*300/4 ??

Thanks!

This plus a D7100:
Nikon Telephoto AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/4D ED-IF Autofocus Lens 1909

Or a Canon 7D II plus a 70-200mm L (non-IS, otherwise the combined price ends up being higher).

Thanks Adam ...

So:

D7100 is $1100.00 USD
The lens is $ 1100.00 USD approx. as well.

The Canon 7DII is nearly $1800.oo, body only! I don't think she will go for that.

The Nikon "kit" sounds better ... I will email that to her now.

For APS-C, she can still find the old 7D, or more likely the 70D (kinda plasticky, but same sensor as new 7DII). Also, Canon makes a nice 300/4 at the same price as the Nikon (not sure why Adam suggested the 70-200L...?), but the Canon 100-400 zoom is also quite nice. Both with IS, which is sorely needed if she wants to get any keepers at these focal lengths with non-stabilized bodies and no long-lens experience.

That's another option.

I checked for prices (Canadian this time):

Canon 7D: $1129.00 Royal Photo- Québec City
100-400 lens : $1649.00
300/4 lens: $1589.00

Well, that could be on the high side but I will send that along to her as well as the Nikon gear info.

Thanks!

As an alternative to CaNikon, what about:

Sony A77ii
Sony 70-400/f4-5.6 G (used, the original version)

Of course, I have no idea how available Sony stuff is up your way!

First the lens: I'd go with a zoom that offers a minimum of 400mm reach for birds. For both Canon and Nikon I'd recommend the new Tamron 150-600mm. The cost is $1069 USD and it is a bargain. A Canon alternative is the 100-400mm L lens. Old design but good, I'd recommend she find one used for $1000. I own both the Canon and the Tamron and would recommend the Tamron for the reach. But she should know how much weight she can handle.

For the body: for Canon the 7D is now discontinued, so the pricing should be decent new if she shops smartly. Used they are dropping in price by the hour; I'm selling mine for $500-600. Nikon I think the D7100 would be OK, but the D7000 would be a bargain used; maybe even the D300s as it has a real high FPS rate. She should stay away from the old model 80-400mm as it is a dog. The new version is very good but pricey.

Here are a couple of shots with the 7D and the Tamron from this weekend, they are both heavily cropped as I was a long ways from the birds.

Male House Sparrow

7D, Tamron 150-600mm @ 600mm, f8 @ 1/350, ISO 400

Goldfinch and Friend

7D, Tamron 150-600mm @ 600mm, f8 @ 1/1000, ISO 400

There will be a lot of used 7D's soon, so that is an option. The Tamron 150-600 as mentioned is a bargain, or the Canon 300/4 are options.
