That was my mother in law a few years ago. She totally bought into the Canon mythos and got herself a T3i two lens kit, complete with a bag and a slew of accessories. Everything she read (or wanted to read) told her that this camera takes great pictures and will make her a great photographer. It didn't take long for the kit to be relegated to the closet. Her pictures weren't any better, the camera was too complicated to use, and the Auto/Program modes weren't smart enough for her. Now she's back to a simple P&S compact and her phone.
Interestingly enough, she shot many, many, many rolls of reversal film in the lat 70s and early 80s using my father in-law's Nikon SLR (not sure of model or specific lens). A lot of those shots came out decently well! Sure, some were not centered or improperly exposed but that can all be fixed after scanning the films.
Go figure ...
