Apple: The No. 2 camera brand!

Interestingly, Apple has now overtaken Nikon to become the No. 2 most popular camera brand (based in terms of Flickr images):
Canon and Apple Were The Top Flickr Cameras in 2014

I am going to use my iPhone as a serious camera more and more this year - not just to capture what I had for lunch.

Here's a photo I took yesterday:

Apple don't make cameras.
So the #2 brand is Sony who make the camera that Apple fit inside their phones.

I'd love to enjoy using my smartphone to take pics but I hate it. The ergonomics are complete garbage. I end up only using it as a last resort.

Apple's software for camera capture, HDR, panoramas, and more is also really excellent -- all of which is built on top of the sensor itself. The sensor is part of the game, but not all of it.

The ARM processor in the iPhone is also customized to support the imaging.

This is a fun fact, but not very indicative of anything in camera business. In the same vein, you could say Apple overtook [whoever] as No1 TV brand, as technically you can watch shows and movies on it.

It's a lot more than Sony's sensor that Apple uses, it is also the lens. Now-a-days a camera is a camera is more than a lens and a light-sensitive medium (body, buttons, software, LCDs, etc.), but at it's essence the Sony unit being used is a camera. I think that Steve.Ledger hit the nail on the head. Still the camera is not complete without all of Apple's extra hardware and software.

I think it's something with the Zeiss name on it, Geomez - or was last time I looked.

TBH, the Samsungs used the same combination in the years they became the number one smartphone sellers.

My LG G3 takes very good pictures, much better than my iPhone 5s, but they are cameras of last resort for me.

Quite possibly. My point was that it is more a camera unit than a sensor.

Day 3 of my iPhoneography project. By the all, images are captured on an iPhone 5S, edited and published on iPhone. No cropping on any image - basically I am treating the iPhone like a rangefinder film camera with a prime.

Completely unrealistic comparison and article here. Apple phones are designed to quickly post images to flickr. Nikon cameras are not.

So you're saying Christine's picture suck because they aren't taken by a Nikon.
Or exactly what are you saying.
So pictures taken with an iPhone don't count because they are more connected than Nikons?

Great pictures by the way Christine.... amazing what you can do with that small sensor DoF.
A great example, you can complain about what you've got isn't, or you can learn to use what you've got to it's strength. It's always the user's choice
