Theres not really a whole hell of a lot of marketing going on though. People think that just because mirror less cameras are actually small and cheaper that means that they arent as good which is a load of bs. My own parents were like "canon and nikon are the biggest ones, samsung arent canon or nikon that must mean its not as good."

Mirrorless are what they are. They have historically been not as good at auto focus, aren't as good ergonomically with large lenses (fast zooms, telephotos), and some folks don't like EVFs. Samsung has worked a lot on their NX series and it looks really nice.

I still think you buy a body for the glass you can mount on it and over the years, Canon and Nikon have developed a very complete lens line up. Hard to beat Nikon's f2.8 zooms or, Canon's L lenses. This is probably why a lot professionals stick with them, even though there are plenty of other options out there.

Still i think whats so exciting about mirrorless is their potential to grow. Sony has a whole ecosystem of apps that you can download onto their cameras. So does samsung. With canon/nikon there is not much in the way of this. I cant speak for canon but with my nikon i got about 2 updates. Those lenses look amazing but they are quite a bit out of my price range and imagine trying to walk around and shoot with them w/out a tripod. Even for a big, pretty strong dude like me i think that might start to get a hard. Ive never really been the kind of photographer to sit there in one place glued to a tripod. Part of why i love photography is that sort of romantic idea of getting out there and exploring new places. I wasnt really that stoked about mirrorless when it first came out. Drtv did comparison between the ovf in the 5dmk3 and the evf in the a7 and the 5dm3 won by a
. The NX1s evf has none of these probems though. In fact it looks bloody awesome

I wasnt too impressed by the ergonomics of the song A series but the NX1 is nice because it has the best of both worlds : the toughness/ergonomics of a dslr with the small size of a mirrorless camera. And im not really going to lie. When i went to zoo with my room mates, i was a little jealous of the small size of the textbook tiny tourist cameras that everyone was carrying. I was debating whether or not to post the video of the NX1s viewfinder because it borders on cameras porn

In my mind, most are just glorified P&S. The only mirrorless I would be interested in would be something like the Leica digital where the sensor is backed by a decent optical viewfinder and a superb manual focus system.

I've seen it in a store, Neostyles, and it's interesting ... but like the GH4, A7 MkII and XT1... I wouldn't call it small! :-)

Get the camera, use it for a while, and only then sing its praises...

I recall you initially lamented having nothing to shoot.
Even though you reside in a nice part of California.

However, instead of working on it, you have just tried to use money/(gear theories) to 'buy' that 'something'.
Coming back here to justify the purchases/decisions.

To do photography, one very important aspect is to be 'there'.
All the theory and gear will do no good if you are not there to see and to take it.

My advise to you is to just use whatever you have and invest more time on shooting (and perhaps travelling)

This!!

There's a reason I have Cartier-Bresson's phrase in my sig. It helped me change my photographic life from frustrated for not having the nice pictures others have, to grateful for the oportunities I do have.

I take it the OP is a former Pentaxian (otherwise he woudn't be in this forum) who jumped to Nikon FF because it would greatly improve his photography? And now history will repeat itself... hopefully he will not take offense at me pointing out these links:

What is the old saying? Oh, yeah...."f/8 and be there".

lol i was watching that just the other day.

@pinholecam: that's true, but i wont be here forever, and i need something that better handle my creative needs when i am there. I want to get into video more professionally and nikon just doesnt have it. The NX1 does 4k, 120fps at 1080p, and you can change the aperture while recording. I dont know why nikon did that. Best of all, you get a histogram, black levels, etc. Video on the nikon is nice it just doesnt feel like it's.. entirely cut out for who they are targeting. Basically love at first sight. It even has that awesome wheel for scrolling through pictures a la canon which is one thing i admit. And the touchscreen looks damn sexy. Plus, it's a whole 200 grams lighter than the d600. I like that it still looks like a dslr because im worried that if i were to show up to a shoot with a "traditional" mirrorless camera like the a6000 they might mistake it for a point and shoot. I guess if your a season pro who's reputation precedes them this isnt really much a problem but im a new photog trying to get my foot in the door.

Even though af is often mentioend as one of the downsides of mirrorless, i still think that the nx1s af is faster than the d600 atleast after the latest firmware upgrade.

The nikon mirrorless has been more or less announced and it is supposed to shoot 4k but its also part of the nikon 1 line of cameras which are hardly suited for pro work.
Nikon J5 May Be the First Nikon Camera to Offer 4K, Expected with the D7200 Soon

But eh i think im kind of done with nikon (i might use nikon lesnes if there are adapters for the nx1) But atm

This is nikon (and canon too)

And this is the world of mirroless

I love you nikon, you are classy and elegant, but you simply havent been taking enough risks as of late

I can't believe you say Palo Alto isn't good for photography. You are a quick BART ride to San Francisco, one of the most target rich cities in the world for photography. You are close to beautiful redwood forests and Napa valley. You are a 2 hour drive to Lake Tahoe.

If you do actually get a NX-1, pls keep us updated on your progress with the camera.
I have doubts that you will hold onto it for more than a few months, and never actually use it to make any videos. Prove me wrong

Buy what you want, shoot what you want... just enjoy the process and get the best out of it.
