Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II Field Impressions & Samples

Spent the weekend shooting with the E-M5 II in Salem and Boston, MA. Here's some brief impressions and plenty of samples: In the Field With the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II - Reviewed.com Cameras

Enjoy!

Nice review. The B&W's all look a bit washed out to me.

Worth noting that many of the museum shots were taken through glass. Also, as mentioned these were SOOC shots. I would definitely have punched them up in post if I were going for edited shots here. Also, there's a "grainy monochrome" picture mode I didn't use that's a lot more contrasty.

Olympus used to make very nice glass back in the day, I wonder how these new lenses are fairing nowadays..

In my experience, the M43 glass is superb. The 12-40/2.8 is extremely sharp throughout the zoom range. The 25/1.8 I used for many of these samples is an incredible bargain. And the other metal primes (12/2, 17/1.8, 45/1.8, 75/1.8) are all similarly excellent.

Thanks for the fine review. I have a thing for Oly, always tempting me away from K-mount...

I saw that you said they were straight out of the camera. Still, I expect more contrast in B&W even straight out of a higher end camera.

Seems like Olympus generally prefers a flatter tone curve for its JPEGs (which are user-adjustable, of course). Their filters, on the other hand, go way, way overboard. Grainy monochrome and dramatic tone look gnarly as heck. Seems like only Fuji and Ricoh get in-camera JPEG filters right.

My 45 is more or less plastic. But it is a very nice and relatively cheap lens. A must to have IMO.
