Ian,

Your images are a compelling reason for the Pentax wildlife shooters to keep an eye open for the coming K1, including myself.
I already use FF (Sony A7r) for allround photography, so I have gotten familiar with the special quality of FF images, but your images here have a color depth and rich contrast that my K3 cannot produce i.m.o.
I have the DA560 and the Pentax HD1.4tc, so there's every reason for me to look out for the K1

Back when I was confronted with getting anther lens for wildlife photography I looked at what would be the best solution for my needs. My decision on going FF was based on if I am going to spend 3-4 x more on the lens than the body the additional cost of going FF was a small drop in the buck and the majority of my wildlife photography I am not FL limited using 300 mm so FF can easily match the equipment I need. At the time pentax had no hint of a FF camera and no FF lenses added to the mix the lack of third party support for some very good lenses out there I went with the D800.

The new 150-450 looks to me as a very nice companion to the K1 as a wildlife lens, I also felt the 560 F5.6 had more of a compelling use on FF as a 400 F3.8 equivalent apsc rig fast enough for most uses

In the last 3 years its is amazing how many wildlife shooters switched over to FF locally

Excellent photography, Ian.

It is obvious to me that your are quite a skilled photographer, of that, IMO, there is no doubt.

The question in my mind though, would your...personal... photographic results be similar....say up to 11 X 14 or so...if you had used a top ASP-C DSLR /lens combo such as a Pentax K-3 or Nikon D 7200...with similar quality lenses as the Nikon lens you use with your FF ?

It's not a criticism, as I'm considering going full frame eventually. More of a request for your thoughts on the matter.

Rather than repeating what is said here using both 24mp on cropped and FF here some of my thoughts https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/16-pentax-news-rumors/298256-ff-out-4-mon...ml#post3381323
Often people would spent a considerately a lot more on lenses to see this kind of gain when using apsc so why not pay once for that gain and buy a FF camera .

There is a lot to consider, if your style of wildlife photography you are not FL limited meaning that you have a lens required for your needs then there can be advantages.
Lens resolution, A lens on a smaller format has to resolve more detail to compete with a larger format lens.

A very good read Equivalence in Pictures: Sharpness/Spatial Resolution | Strolls with my Dog

This will also give you an advantage when using a TC as you will see very little loss to IQ even when using a cheaper zoom like the 200-500 F5.6
I have a limited time with the D810 and 200-500 F5.6 along with I think was the older 1.4 converter

warning large full res image
as you can see not much of an IQ penalty

Cost of FF when you consider equivalent lenses
( cut and paste from another post)
This is how I look at the augment of selecting FF or Apsc
My needs in a Apsc
16-50 F2.8 $1070
50-135 F2.8 $1170
200 F2 $6800
300 F2.8 $7500
Total =$16540
FF
24-70 F4 $1370
70-200 F4 $1300
300 F2.8 $7500
400 F4 $7500
Total=$17670
With apsc I would save 7% on buying my dream system lenses
Why would I not spend the little extra on the FF body and gain all of the benefits of FF for just $1500 dollars

The price difference we see between FF and APSc lenses really is not from that of the format but rather what lenses are not available with same aperture diameter. The benefit with Apsc is that sometimes we are forced into buying a lens with a larger aperture diameter in FF than what would need and this is what drives up the cost of FF

The largest deciding factor is versatility with my 200-400 lens I can have a 400 F4 36mp FF camera, 500mm F5 24mp 1.2 cropped camera or 600 F F6 15mp 1.5cropped camera. Big advantage when out in the Field.
or with a walk around wildlife lens like the 70-200 F4 it shares the same versatility with no real cost penalty as the 50-135 F2.8 other than the FF body.

you gain not only the immediate benefits of ff, you also gain future benefits as well... there is an argument to be made that crop sensor development is close to being maxed out, given that the nx1 is the only bsi-sensor camera on the market, and it's only 28mp... there has been nothing from pentax about releasing another crop camera beyond the k3ii? crop is just not as profitable for camera companies to develop, the roi is lower.

compare that with ff sensors, which still haven't reached the pixel density that current crop cameras have; ff is much more profitable for the camera companies, so they have incentive to develop higher pixel densities, with more modern sensor technology.

but then again there is the sar rumor mill, now claiming that sony is releasing a 36mp crop camera: sonyalpharumorsDOTcom/sr3-sony-a6100-si-shipping-in-march-rumored-to-feature-a-new-36mp-bsi-sensor/

I would be shocked if pentax didnt release another APS-C camera. But i wouldn't be surprised if it was more like the K-S2 and not like the K-3II

you did kind of conveniently leave out the cost of the dream FF camera to pair with those lenses - which exceeds top of the line aps-c by a huge margin

Most people look at the cost of the camera before the cost of the lenses

And some people when looking for a system may decide that the addition cost of the FF body is worth the upgrade when they realize that the cost of going FF is not in the lenses. Right now if I am going to buy a 200 F2 for apsc or 300 F2.8 for FF the price of picking up a D750 or a K3II is secondary. When I am spending $6000 on a lens the price of going FF and spending $1200 more is the least of my concerns and when considering that I am build a system with more than 1 lens it even gets less.
