From DPR, they report about the 70-200 f2.8:

The 70-200 sports a dual implementation: two focus groups at either end of the lens are drive by different actuators. A ring drive SSM drives the front AF group while dual linear motors drive a floating rear group.

My first instinct upon reading this was: so much to go wrong!
Plus the lens has optical stabilisation built-in too, meaning some lens elements are magnetically floating around.

Expensive repairs and time consuming adjustments ahead.

...and we all know Sony users are flocking to it and praising it as the second coming of Christ.

Don't they always do that at every single thing Sony releases?

I bought their cameras three times, so repeatedly saw the queue to buy the product, and the other to get lobotomized that the other customers ran towards obediently. 😀

I wonder when Sony will have a body that can use these lenses ergonomically. I know you can mount large lenses on a mirrorless camera, but I can't see a wedding photographer, for instance, enjoying shooting a full day with the 70-200 f2.8 "G Master" on an A7r.

Sony doesn't care about ergonomics, they are an electronics company. It's like asking Leica to make a cheap lens*

*technically they do: the Leica Elmarit-M 50mm f/2.8, it is cheap compared to other Leica lenses.

Yes, it feels like Sony makes gadgets. Nice gadgets that are capable of taking excellent photos, but gadgets non the less. If someone doesn't need fast zooms and, in particular, doesn't mind poorly engineered primes that require a lot of software manipulation to look decent, than their cameras should fit the bill. Even with this announcement, I would tend to go to traditional SLR design if one needs fast zooms precisely because of the whole ergonomic issue and the simple reality that there is no size reduction overall once you mount a 70-200 f2.8 or 24-70 f2.8 lens on one of these cameras.

The A9 is probably not far off. Sony has not had the glass for such a camera and the glass is what takes a long time to develop. Before the launch of the A900 Sony launched the Sony/Zeiss 85mm F/1.4 and the 24-70 F/2.8. Once the glass is shipping I expect to see a larger A9 with a bigger battery, more processing power, and better ergonomics.
