GO PRO versus RICOH WG-M2

Well at the other end of the spectrum Ricoh have pulled a rabbit out of their hat....4K video, over 100 bit rate, dual mikes,40% lighter than wg-m1 and has an adapter to use plenty of GP mounts.Lots of impressive promotional YouTube clips.Ricoh is marketing and promoting!!!!

Specs look GOOD,probably a new leader in that sector.

They're definitely onto something with the WG-M2. 4K/30p at this price point is really, really appealing. Nice to see they shaved off a good amount of weight, too.

The WG-M2 looks pretty cool. I've noticed the GoPro has a newer, more expensive HERO4 version. It is waterproof to about twice the depth as the WG-M2, shoots 120FPS at 1080p and 240FPS at 720p which is pretty important for good slow motion action. And the WG-M2 advertises shockproof only to 6.5 ft. I didn't see any specs on that with the GoPro but it's know to survive a 100 ft fall onto concrete.

i'll be an early adopter on this one....one thing I wont be doing is dropping it on concrete from any height( if I can help it)

my use is on top of the water or just underneath....slo mo at 120(HD) is good enough

the important spec is 4K with over 100 bitrate

GO RICOH!

I hope you report back your finding. I have settled with Sony Action Cam HDR-AS100V with the remote control that I wear like a watch for Rec/stop-record and viewing while filming

Some photos from Sony HDR-AS100V

I wish to find out more about the LCD on-top and if the lcd can display reasonably while filming, that would be a big plus. The Sony Action Cam has a lot of distortion in still pictures and I would imagine similar working on Pentax with a wider view. I wish I can find profile in Lightroom to correct the problem.

Some distortion works ok while some are poor and hard to correct -- I lack the skill in correcting distortion in LR lens customized compensation

The extreme distortion when I aim at an angle to my boy in North Lake Tahoe in California

I wish the Pentax to add the following:
  • raw file
  • usb3 instead of usb2
  • 10mb to 12mb instead of 8mb -- not the most important
  • usable display under the sun
  • adjustable view angle to have setting from 204 degree down to lesser angle as in a zoom lens. What I need is a gadget that goes wide as default but quickly offer a zoom setting equivalent to focal length of 35, 50 and 85 for portrait use (most ridiculous request but something I want from an action camera)
  • better shock proof and freeze proof in cold weather

Cheers,
Hin

Yes, will do a report as soon as I get to use it....normally I look for value when I buy anything, but in this case i'll pay the opening price

However my use will predominately for videoing surfing action, I'm doubting i'll specifically shoot stills
.....im wondering if it will lift stills off the video(in camera) like my NX500?

I think still photo is supported as a individual mode in the camera, at least that is my pleasant experience on use with my Sony action camera. It comes in handy on trip where you are focused on just video + occasional use with pictures. That way, I have the option to bring one single device. Imaging a biking, boating, skiing trip with a single gadget mounted on your helmet or shoulder and you are free to dive in on your activity and not let the gear get in the way.

Cheers,
Hin
