Stop buying marketing propaganda !

So with each new camera, the max iso go higher and we have people saying wow 51200 iso !!! wow 409600 isos wow, wow !

And we have the manufacturers explaining how they got fantastic shots at very high isos, that it was hard but thanks to their engineers dedication they managed to improve things dramatically.

I mean look that was we go with max K3 iso setting: 51200:

K3 51200 iso:

But obviously Nikon has a very fancy sport/action camera that work so well their engineer managed 3 millions iso. It look soooo great:

High ISO into the stratosphere: Nikon D5 First Shots are here, including ISO 3,280,000!

So next time you see incredible iso numbers, remember this 3 millions iso picture... This is just garbage and marketing propaganda... what count is not the max setting but the actual performance as setting you would consider to use...

I agree with what you're saying - mostly - but looking at Imaging Resource comparison of the D5 vs D4S, I'm impressed with the D5 at 102,400. Still lots of useful detail in there for a 100% crop

I tested D5 today. Looked just as good at 51 200 as K-3 II does at 3200! Its useless at 800 and below though..So I'm glad i will use K-1

That's redundant...

Yes..i was like "WTF??", so impressive by Nikon there. But as i said, its useless on lower ISO..Nikon says that too..So its not for studio, landscape etc. Its made for sport, action, concerts etc.

Apparently Nikon tweaks the sensor sacrifice the low ISO performance and shifted the focus to high ISO(mainly indoor activities)... If simply compare the physical aspect between D5 and K3, 2.5 stops advantage at most if the ISO invariance is perserved like K3.

Very interesting! Thanks for sharing this. When you say it's not good on lower ISO, how does that manifest itself?

The top two ISOs seem to be for bragging rights only. Rest are legit I'd say

SO true! And I say this as someone who worked in marketing for a number of years and was married to a VP of marketing. The marketing from any camera company is only going to give you the rosiest picture. Yes...marketing IS propaganda!

you have to test each camera to see what isos will work for you.
usually the top # is junk for image quality.

I'm still waiting when some manufacturer figures out that temperature is important and straps a peltier to their sensor to drag it down to -50C for better high ISO shots

They would need pretty beefy battery pack though for it to keep shooting more than 5 minutes per charge
