This idea seems familiar

My Pentax WG-2 has a similar concept as this: Canon's new macro lens has a built-in ring flash | The Verge

Guess they were onto a good thing then.

It's not really a new idea, many medical macro lenses have had built in right flash for decades.

One example:

Edit: Pentax was also long before Canon in producing a "normal macro" for APS-C with the DA 35/2.8 macro limited.

Yeah, putting a light on the lens is not new in medical field (or even on smartphones and compact cameras like OP pointed out), but it is new in hobby and pro still photography systems. It seems like a good solution, especially for such a wide angle macro lens.
What I find most surprising is that the macro lens has such a wide angle focal length, and that it is for Canon M system (where nothing much was happening, despite the fact that on release it seemed like it could be a big competition to Pentax' compact APSC cameras)

Pentax could try this with the 35mm macro, or an FF equivalent. I would like to see it
