Its "characterful" if the price is right.
But for a modern lens at this price, I find it surprising to say the least.
Obviously something's gotta give with f1.4 such that optical vignetting occurs.

This lens is exactly the spec sheet, ego boosters that we the consumers seem to be driving the makers towards.
At the expense of the wallet, encumbrance and imo logical usage of lenses in more generalist real use situations.

Great as a lens one has a Sherpa hauling a few of them around during a trip.
Nikon won't sell a lot of this lens. It's just a way of saying "we can do better than competitors".

Otherwise i agree with you : create some usefull lenses instead !

I do quite a bit of close up portraits. It would me interesting to see the separation between the eyes and the rest of the head with this lens on an apsc sensor. The more I think, the more use I can see getting from this lens and just having fun with the extra reach, fast aperture and bokeh. But I just don't make the kind of salary to spend on something like this.

All Sonnar lens designs have the cats eye bokeh. I have never had a client complain about it and many people like the look of a Sonnar lens.

Looks like a great lens. The 58mm F/1.4 and 100mm F/1.4 would make a great setup. Add the 35mm f/1.4 and I could do 90% of my work.

Nikon will sell plenty of them. Its a fast prime and for people who like fast primes this is a great lens. People said the same thing about the Canon 85mm F/1.2. Its big, expensive, heavy, and has slow AF. Just about every serious Canon wedding and portrait photographer has one in his or her bag. Wedding and portrait combine to make the single largest segment of professional photography.

Not only it change the perspective noticably and need you to be much further away from the subject but it isn't the case. Then only case where 200mm f/2.8 and 105mm f/1.4 are roughtly equivalent is if you put the 200mm on FF and the 105mm on m4/3...

The 200mm f/2.8 background blur will only start to be similar to that 105mm f/1.4 if it 50-100m from the subject. And if the background is only 1, 2, 3 or 4 meters aways, the 105mm f/1.4 will blur things much more. You need a 200mm f/2 to get something similar to a 105mm f/1.4 and it could be argued that 105mm f/1.4 offer a more comfortable working distance as well as much smaller/ligher/handoldable lens.

As there already a few 105mm pictures on this thread, you are welcome to show us some nice portraits with your DFA70-200 to show how unecessary that 105mm is

Boy, #2 and #3 are disgusting looking. That non-bokeh looks like a child tried postprocessing. Better delete it right away than show it around.
So you can only get 50% of ok shots with that lens?

Maybe they sent the intern to make those shots and it's not the lens' fault to produce such rubbish.
Me I found the picture really outstanding. Now the question is what the photographers clients will think really... And if we speak of f/5.6 or f/8 well there 18-135 for that and a K50...

LensRentals just did a tear-down of this lens:

https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2016/12/taking-apart-the-new-nikon-105mm-f1-4e-ed-af-s/

Roger has great fun with the fact the circuitry layout of this lens seems decades behind the times. And that the supposedly 'gear-less' SWM motor of this lens has, in fact, gears. And plastic ones to boot.

Not a problem if Nikon will just give a 30 year warranty in the lens motor and gearing.

As someone who has had lots of bad experiences with nylon gears in Ford automotive power-windows, replace '30 years' to '6 months' and you might be closer to the truth.

If that were true, we'd send our lenses in service, with stripped gears, twice a year. Yet we don't.
