Have you considered the Fujifilm XQ2? That camera is pretty flat and it takes nice JPEGs. It's also well made and has decent amount of direct control. I think it can be found for around $300, and if not you might be able to find its predecessors the XQ1 or XF1 cheaper. I bought an XF1 for my father-in-law for about $150 last year, and he really likes it. Actually, now I wish I'd bought another one for myself, because I could use a suit-pocket camera for business trips.

I guess the Canon G9 or G7 II are beyond your budget, but they look nice too.

It's a real shame that Ricoh doesn't make anything like this any more. They should bring back the GX series with an up to date model. That was a nicely designed camera - like a GR Digital with a good quality zoom lens.

Thanks I'm looking at the XQ2 I wasn't aware of it.
those canons do look nice but beyond what use it will get
