Best FF under $1500

Any suggestions or opinions on the best non-pentax FF under $1500? Any input is appreciated. Portrait and landscape photography would be the main uses. Thanks!

D610 Nikon would be my thought. Fits the budget, refurbished units save more for lenses, main downside is autofocus [sophistication and live view focus] speed which landscape and portrait can live with.

Why not Pentax?

EDIT: added clarification in brackets.

Well, I might buy a K-1 if it were under $1,500.

Meanwhile, the Canon 6d is a great camera for portrait and landscape work. Very good high ISO, minimalist control structure, very lightweight. Pretty much 95 percent of the goodness of a 5DIII for a fraction of the cost. Can get them on Canon refurb site or used at KEH for around $1,100-$1,200.

Canon 5Dc (ie. c=classic) with EES focusing screen + manual primes.
That low pixel density just gives a "magic dust" look for portraits.
Its 12mp, but enough for most needs imo.
ISO3200 max, but really usable up to that ISO too.
Probably almost free in terms of price nowadays as people chase the latest stuff.

Otherwise, a Kolari modded A7 (again with old primes)

If you already have lenses I'd suggest using a Metabones Speedbooster on a mirrorless body if you simply want the full image getting to the sensor.. If you truly want a 24x36mm sensor than I'd suggest deciding on what lenses you need first. Then decide whether Canon or Nikon offers you better choices and get an early body to work with your chosen lenses. The good thing about Nikon and Canon both having offered "full frame" bodies for so long now is that the used market is full of them. You could likely find a Canon 5D II body or Nikon D610 for under $1K and that is quite a bargain compared to the price when new.

ADD $500 and get the K1!

Otherwise a Sony A7(2)...with the AF adapter and mount the great quality A/M/K primes.

That, I think, is the step over which the OP is stumbling. Some people simply can't stretch that extra distance, however small it may seem to others.

Me, I'm saving to get the k1. This isn't for me. I can't convince my colleague to go with Pentax. He wants to stick with a company " he's heard of ". I had suggested a Nikon or Sony. I just don't know the +/- of each model.
Uncle...the AF on the d610 is not that fast? You seem to indicate that, yes?
Thanks all

I just hope you realize that lenses are more important than camera. You can buy D810, but if you have only $100 to spend on a lens, the camera is practically useless.
This is why a lot of people prefer to start with APSC and build a nice lens repertoire slowly, then upgrade camera when everything else is ready. Like, if you buy a K-5IIs or K-3 and spend the rest of the budget on a good portrait lens and two wide angle lenses, then you would be set for a while and have a lot of room to hone your skills

But I guess the answer to your question would be one of the Sony cameras or a used Nikon

I may be overstating what I have read. I haven't used a d610 but reviews indicate that it had more limited af sensors and slow live view and video focusing.

Nikon D610 Review: Digital Photography Review

In some ways the af performance complaints (more limited coverage of the frame) echo the k-1 complaints from some reviewers. I would suggest that at a minimum the camera is less sophisticated at autofocus than some higher end options.

I know someone who used the D600 for shooting birds...then he had a D750...now he has a D500 APS-C...

Many also like the Canon 6D, but if he' talking 1500 with a lens, that limits him to even older bodies, One of my friends has a son who works professionally with a 6D, I know, I know every one will think he needs better, but he's making money, they aren't.

It enables him to take company lenses on shoots, instead of having to buy everything himself...but, the first question your friend should ask is what lens he'd like, then buy a camera that goes with it.

Consider A7ii, very good when working with smart adapters, mean you can try a lot of lens.

For my lenses collected over the past 50 years the A7 has proven a great option. (I don't use autofocus.)
