Camera marketing a big joke?

Reading Sony interview from DPR.

Key quote from Sony marketing: "Our biggest focus is to increase the market, not to segment it".
And next to it: "There are many types of professionals. Our target for the a7R II are landscape and portrait shooters. The a7S II has been adopted by many professional videographers."

If that's not segmentation, I don't know what this is.

If Canon marketing exec. read this, they certainly have a good laugh.

With DPR going for a visit , polishing shoes, to maintain / secure the next big online advertising contract with Sony.

Better keep photography on the level of a hobby.

All marketing is designed to separate fools from their money. The camera biz is no different.

At Pentax there is marketing, they don't need to work because the Pentax cameras sell themselves.

Pentax style
:
Pentax marketing hibernates like marmots and wake up a few times a year when interrupted from sleep:
1) Once every 20 years: For studying the Full Frame market after Ricoh shaking Pentax from Hoya, 3 years of hard work reading the specification and tear down of the D810, add the O-GPS unit and the pixel shift taken from K3II.
2) Once a year: Been waked up by engineers who finished the new camera model, have to write a press release for the new product, oh no, that's a lot of work.
3) Once a year: Answer Pentax forum interview questions from Adam, the trick is to say something vague so that the Pentaxians do not to give up k mount, and prevent Canon from copying the Pentax ideas, except regarding pixel shift, Canon can't move the sensors coz Canon sensors are glued at the back of their cameras, that's a lot cheaper to make.
4) Once in a decade: Emergency: usually stay asleep when Canikon supporters bashing Pentax all the time (that's business as usual), but eventually react officially to deny rumor of Pentax stopping camera business when the bashing from anonymous crosses border to Nikkei public press

Sony style
: we will grow the market (hopefully not too much of it will be grabbed by Canon).

Canon style: we want to be number one in big DSLR (well that's not that difficult, you are already there).

Fuji: we already told you many times, you don't need a full frame camera because our X trans beats them all (we gave so much money to Zack to tell you that), but you do need a GFX50 cropped MF (Don't have the money? humm , never mind).

Probably he was referring to the now announced A9 or whatever is called - "expanding" their market to the pro segment, as opposed to launching more cameras in the same segments they're already in.

There has always been different levels of cameras for different levels of people. From total noob, to hobbyist, to pros. Pentax has done this, as has canikon....why would sony be any different?

Lol, Olympus certainly saturated the review corps after taking them to Iceland for the launch of the EM1 Mark II, but not in the way they anticipated. It was so dark, wet and cold that the camera's sports and tracking abilities couldn't be put to use.

Dipreview has yet another article on Sony and the A9 story today. The coverage of what is really just another camera, and so far unproven, is completely over the top and out the window. It makes me tempted to buy something obviously out of date just to give the finger to the hype machine. A lot of marketing strikes me as the lavishly illustrated cock-up rather than the ordinary cock-up we're all used to.

Actually, Sony's primary goal is to show-case their sensors so they can sell more of them to Nikon and others.
They may grab a small portion of the existing market to get the attention of those who formerly had those users. but I haven't seen them do much of anything to bring new users into the market.
