I eat occasionally at McDonalds, being pushed by friends - "you didn't try this week's burgers, they're now as good as a proper meal!".
But they aren't. Their only redeeming quality is that a cook can make 20bpm (burgers per minute) without blinking.

Wouldn't it be nice if Pentax can have something similar in LV

Scary too, I think. Gives you a good idea of the capabilities of modern CCTV systems, surveillance devices, drones etc.

A9

QuoteQuote:
With the mechanical shutter, the Sony A9's top burst speed is a claimed 5 frames per second no matter the file type, and we were able to confirm that in the lab. With the electronic shutter, the top burst speed is 20 frames per second for JPEGs, compressed RAW or compressed RAW+JPEG files, which we also confirmed in our tests. When shooting uncompressed RAW files, the top burst speed dropped to about 12 frames per second, as advertised. We have also determined that all continuous mode RAW files are 12 bits, whether compressed or uncompressed.

Buffer depths were excellent, ranging from a minimum of 116 uncompressed RAW+JPEG files at 12 frames per second in the worst case to unlimited frames (limited only by the capacity of the card) when shooting compressed RAW at 5 fps with the mechanical shutter. At the top speed of 20 fps, the Sony A9 was able to shoot 364 JPEGs, 240 compressed RAW or 225 compressed RAW+JPEG files before slowing, which is within a couple frames of their specs.

Unfortunately, even with one of the fastest UHS-II cards on the market (a Lexar Pro 2000x UHS-II SDXC card) installed in the one slot that supports UHS-II, clearing the buffer can take a long time, particularly with JPEG files. The worst-case buffer clearing time in our tests was a glacial 254 seconds or over 4.2 minutes after shooting a max-length burst of best quality JPEGs at 5 fps, which fell slightly to 236 seconds after shooting 364 JPEGs at 20 fps. Buffer clearing was faster when shooting RAW files, but could still take well over half a minute for long bursts. (It appears the A9 is doing some JPEG processing while it writes them to the card as RAW files are written to the card roughly 4 to 5x faster than JPEGs by our estimation.) Only when shooting compressed RAW at 5 fps was the camera able to clear its buffer in near real-time, essentially keeping up with the capture rate. The Sony A9 does let you change some settings and view just-shot images while the buffer is clearing, however access to the menu system is unavailable.
If I understand this correctly, shooting uncompressed Raw the A9shoots about the same as my K-1 using the same uncompressed raw mechanical shutter setting. 5fps for the Sony 4.6 for the the K-1. The 20 FPS is for compressed raw.

Anyone know if someone coming from DNG raw would find the compressed raw acceptable?

This will also be of interest.

For photographers who primarily shoot portraits its a huge feature. Kids that are in constant motion are perfect for this technology.

They need to develop it for an OVF with a digital overlay.

Also this one... "But if you opt to disable electronic shutter in favor of the mechanical one, performance is slashed to a maximum of five frames per second, with an even more modest 2.5 fps rate available in Continuous Lo mode."

And according to this link: http://blog.kasson.com/the-last-word/how-fast-is-the-sony-a9-electronic-shutter/
The A9 would have a max sync speed of 1/150 when using the electronic shutter. No bad, but not as good as a mechanical shutter.

sry. i think that is just WRONG, despite the fact the guy wrote about 1/160 ...
(it seems you want to paint it black a bit)
Sony clearly says electronical shutter speeds up to 1/32000 sec.

But forget all that... Lets have ELECTRONICAL SHUTTER ON PENTAX DSLRs!!!
>>>
What about a firmware update to make Electronical Shutter work on the K-70?

It would be nice to be able to opt for a really quiet shutter sometimes. And from a technical point of view the Pentax K-70 is doing it already,
because every time you take a pixelshift photo, the camera takes 4 pictures and only actuates the mechanical shutter once.
(Just in case one or the other hasn't noticed that until now.)

The PENTAX K-70 opens the curtain, like in liveview.. but uses its electronical shutter capabilities to take 4 photos in a row and then closes the curtain again.)

So i start to ask myself, why for Petes sake, doesnt it offer a single frame Electronical Shutter or even an electronical shutter burst mode... when its capable of?

all those bad jokes... how long does one want to take that....?

You don't know it actually works on kids in motion. It's pretty impressive on a stationary subject. So is my K-3 in AF.s

There is a video with a kid in constant motion in the dark that winder is talking about. The green square means the area is focus confirmed. The A9 did not lose focus on the child until she disappeared into the shadows

The K70 doesn't offer an electronic shutter because Pentax didn't want to. Clearly they could have, but they want to keep this as a feature for higher end cameras.

All the camera companies do this sort of thing. Stuff like limiting number of exposures in multiple exposure mode to 3 rather than 5 or not even including such a mode. Clearly they want you to buy a little higher end camera.

The A9 is a top end camera and hardly to be compared with the K-70 in any respect.

Yes. Other than the $4,500 price and the average build quality it looks like a camera that will make a lot of waves in the market. I hope that the AF, battery, and sensor find their way into the A7III minus the huge buffer and the Ethernet port. The A9 should have simply been the A7III. The A9 doesn't look like a pro-build body and for that price it should be.
